I have a Ukraine stamp, I think is from the 1960's (at least it was in an
album with russian/polish stamps of the same time frame). It does NOT have
Noyta nor CCCP on the stamp. It has a man with a very bushy mustache, a very
very warm looking coat and parka.

What I'm looking for is a source for Older Ukraine stamp photo's to match up
to what I have, as well
I'm looking for a good source for the history of this
stamp (who is this person, why is he on the stamp...)

I have done many searches at this point, and have come
up pretty empty. My Cyrillic is none, so reading the stamps is impossible,
and can't type some of the letters into a search engine :(

Thanks
George

May I suggest you to put the image of the stamp on a web page and to give us
the URL. So we can read the text on it. The older Ukraine stamps were issued
between 1918 - 1919, the newer start with 1992.

Hi George,
You may send me a scan of this stamp.
I could _try_ to identify it for you.
I suspect it could not be a stamp of Ukrain in 1960 as Ukrain was
independent from USSR from 1918 to 1923 and from 1991 ?

It won't have been Ukraine; at that time, Ukraine was part
of the USSR. However some other countries use Cyrillic
or similar inscriptions; I can approximate them thus:
bbATAPNR - Bulgaria
EAAAE - Greece
JYTOCAABNJA - Yugoslavia
etc. etc.

It would help if you could approximate the Cyrillic
inscription on your stamp the same way - give us
something to work on, at least.

It may of course be some sort of unofficial or propaganda stamp for
ukrainians in exile, but without a scan its difficult to tell

Hi George,

Here is the answer ;-))
I was quite lucky to retrieve your stamp (thanks to your scan ;-))

Your scan is beautiful and very 'slim' : only 1 minute to load it ;-)))

It was very easy to identify this stamp :
# 140 in Yvert & Tellier catalogue (sorry I don't have Scott nor S.G.)
Depicting Ukrainian poet Tarass Chevtchenko (this is a 'French'
transcription of the cyrillic letters : English may differ a little bit
;-)))
This stamp from 1921 (not 1960 ;-) was never officially issued
Catalog value : nil (1 FF ie 1/7 th US $) at the time of my latest Ukraine
catalog (1996)
Sorry for you ;-((((
This stamp exists as well without perfs.

Interesting man however (and an impressive face !) :
This poet, was born in 1804 in a state of serfdom (dead in 1861)
He was an autodidact, learned alone painting and published in 1840 a set of
poems (in Ukrainian language) which gave him celebrity. He then fighted long
time for abolition of serfdom and to move the Slavic nations towards
federated republics. Enroled by force in a Russian regiment at Orenburgh he
was given pardon (of what ? My dictionnary does not tell !) by Czar
Alexander II.
He is considered as the father of Ukrainian national litterature.

I take the liberty to put this answer on the forum as well as this may be of
interest for some of the readers ; some addenda may be also given ?

Here is the transcription of the cyrillic words on the stamp :

(P)O(S)TA (Post)
YKPAIHCKA HAPO(D)H(R) PEC(P)YB(L)IKA
(Western Ukrainian Republic)
20 (G)P(I)BEHb 20 (20 grivny)
(2 grivny = 1 ruble)

(I never learned Russian language : only Greek, which helps to recognize the
letters ;-))

The inscription should be "Ukrainian National Republic", not "Western
Ukrainian Republic".

YKPAIHCKA HAPO(D)H(R) PEC(P)YB(L)IKA

means Ukrainian Popular Republic. HAPO(D) = people. National =
HA(TI)OHA(L)HA(I)A

Sorry for being pedantic.

At the beginning, the Middle and Eastern European countries controlled by
the USSR were named Popular (example: Romanian Popular Republic - RPR).
Later they were considered more "advanced" and became Socialist Republics
(Example: Romanian Socialist Republic - RSR). Their leader was already
advanced enough and had the name of USSR, Union of Soviet _Socialist_
Republics.
