On 18th July, 2006, Royal Mail has issued a set of 10 stamps and a card
series, featuring portraits from the National Portrait Gallery in London. I
was delighted when I received an unexpected letter this morning from a
British friend, who had sent me 10 maximum-cards from this series.

To Ian Billings: I have borrowed some text bites from your page, and also
given a link to your very nice page about this issue, but the scans are my
own :-)

Nice, really nice.

The good question is how to get the maximum cards? On the royalmail.com one
can get the stamps, and also the cards but not the maxicards.

Any idea how to get them, or maybe there is a generous English philatelic
soul here who would like some stamps or maybe things like chocolate from
Switzerland? :-)

Your good question has a good answer given already on the web page.

Scroll to the bottom and find the link to Norvic Philatelics. I have checked
it, they sell the cards, stamps, FDCs. Prices and payment options are
quoted.

Thank you. Unfortunately, I couldn't find the maxicards in their offer
either but I'll ask them.

I have asked at NP and, rather as expected, they don't carry stocks of MCs,
"as we have very few enquiries for these".

How cruel and unfair is our world! Those who need them cannot find them, and
those who don't collect stamps issued after the year 2000 get them
unexpectingly. The time for a new revolution came, this also because El
Comandante is suddenly in a stable condition.

Hello Victor, and Hello also to Mette.

Thanks to your enquiry I shall be posting here more regularly, details of all
new stamp issues from Great Britain.

Just to explain our predicament - I'm sorry but this does nothing to help you
Victor!

First Day Covers are bigger sellers than the Stamp Cards, or PHQ cards. We have
a few regular customers for serviced cards and do 4-5 sets only. We also do
about 30 FDCs, and our cash is tied up in stock of those. You are the first to
ask for serviced cards AFTER the event in 3 years. We publish details of all
new stamp issues up to 12 months ahead. As of now we have the 2007 outline
programme on our website, and details of the Beatles stamps should be provided
on a separate page by October, possibly including pictures. These will be
issued on 16 January.

For each stamp issue there are between 15-30 pictorial postmarks. All our
customers for NPG cards had each card cancelled with a different postmark, and
all the postmarks were applied in the best place to see it against the many dark
stamps. As well as FDCs, stamps and stamp cards we can also supply - for the
thematic collector - copies of any of the postmarks on plain white c6 envelopes
with either the relevant stamp or definitive stamps. The white envelope enables
the postmark to be seen at its best.

We stock *very* few of these for the same reason that we do not stock serviced
cards. With 12 stamp issues and (say) 30 postmarks we would, if we had just one
of each with a basic rate stamp, invest over £100 per annum. Guessing which
ones would be popular after the event would provide us with a major headache!
The only issue for which we have held significant stocks in recent times were
the British Motorcycles which we subsequently sold to collectors in Germany,
Holland, the USA and here in Britain.

Unlike the USA and some other countries, Royal Mail will not apply postmarks to
anything sent to them after the date of issue. We would have been pleased to
help you had this not been so. Only in very exceptional circumstances are we
able to get covers/cards postmarked after the event.

We do have a few serviced cards of previous issues, mainly from the 1980s when
there were far more collectors of them than there are now.

Sorry we can't help, but we'll try harder in future to publicise our wares, on
r.c.s.marketplace.
