A Rembrandt self-portrait stolen from a museum in Stockholm has been
recovered in Denmark
http://arts.monstersandcritics.com/news/article_1048731.php/Rembrandt_self-portrait_recovered_in_Denmark

The portrait has appeared on a stamp from Dahomey in 1969

The painting, valued at more than 60 million $, is in good condition and
still in its original frame. According to Danish TV-news it was attempted
sold for as little as 3 million dollars!

Oh Mette,

Shocking !
Are you so desperately needing some cash to try to sell off such a
masterpiece ?

;-)

Sorry : could not resist :-)

Two Iraqis, a Gambian and a Swede have stolen the mentioned Rembrandt and
two Renoirs in 2000 from Sweden's National Museum.

Renoir’s “Conversation” was recovered by Swedish police in 2001. His “A
Young Parisienne” is still missing.

According to Swiss TV news from yesterday evening, an FBI agent has proposed
CHF 100,000 (about US$ 79,000) for the Rembrandt's self-portrait to the
thieves, who, short of cash, accepted the transaction and were then caught.

The recovered portrait of Rembrandt is shown on my page from the year 1997
"Self-portrait or the Art of Introspection"

As of 30th November 1975 Dahomey changed its name to People's Republic of
Benin, so if your stamp is from 1997 the country's name would be as
mentioned.

The painting's title is "Self-Portrait with a Golden Chain". My stamp is
listed in Michel as 1969 #404.

It's my Web page that is from 1997, not the stamp.

Unfortunately, I haven't checked the information you provided that the
recovered painting is shown on:

http://queries.heindorffhus.dk/dahomey1969-RenbrandtSelfPortrait.jpg

Actually, the recovered painting is shown here:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/4252568.stm

so it isn't that displayed on the Dahomey stamp :-((

Just to mention that the painting shown on the Dahomey stamp can be still
found in the Musée du Louvre (fortunately :)

A more complete story concerning the recovered Rembrandt's painting (and
_both_ Renoirs) can be found here:
