Infusion of dollar coins will make pockets jingle more

Thursday, October 30, 2008 Kalamazoo

WAYLAND -- Shoppers in Wayland and Hopkins may hear a
little more jingle in their pockets in the next few
weeks, thanks to a joint program between the U.S.
Mint and the United Bank of Michigan to boost
circulation of dollar coins in the area.

From Monday through Nov. 7, the Grand Rapids-based
United Bank will distribute the gold-colored coins
instead of paper dollar bills at its Wayland,
Hopkins, Gun Lake, Byron Center, Caledonia and Dorr
branches.

A different presidential coin is being issued every
three months, in the order the presidents served in
office. ``In God We Trust'' is on the sides of the
coins.

United Bank, which has 11 branches in West Michigan,
is the only banking company in the state participating
in the effort.

``The whole idea here is to encourage consumers to
use the dollar coins in their normal, everyday
activities,'' Byron Center branch manager Jennifer
Ferguson said.

Taxpayers would save about $500 million in annual
printing costs if they used the dollar coins
instead of paper dollars.

Bills of larger denominations will be distributed
at the participating branches during the program.
Customers who request paper dollars instead of
dollar coins can get paper dollars.

Several businesses in the Wayland and Hopkins areas
also will circulate dollar coins.

In Hopkins, CD's Quik Mart, Hopkins Hardware and
Russo's Pizzeria will participate.

Wayland's participants include Harding's Market,
Kentucky Fried Chicken, Shear Concepts Hair &
Tanning, Taco Bell, Vicki's Hallmark, Wayland Do
It Best Hardware and Rental Center, and Wayland
Village Drugs.

The U.S. Mint introduced the presidential
series of dollar coins in February 2007.

How many trillions would we save by stop minting the dollar coin? I
have friend up that way who I'm going to call and request they're back
to keep one dollar paper money!

ATTENTION US GOVERNMENT
People will not use a dollar coin until the dollar bill is withdrawn
from circulation.
Any alleged savings of the dollar coin have surely been offset by the
zillions the government has spent trying to get people to use it.
Not to mention the Prez bucks are the ugliest coins ever issued by the
US Mint.
