Rare gold coin sells for £20,000

A rare gold coin, dating from about 830
to 850 AD, has been sold at auction in
Suffolk for nearly £20,000.

The coin, which is about the size of a
20p piece, was among the possessions of
a road-worker from the King's Lynn area
of Norfolk who had died.

His daughter took the Western European
gold solidus coin to a valuation day at
auctioneers Lockdales in November 2008.

Lockdales sold it in Ipswich on Sunday
for £19,300. It had been estimated to
sell for up to £10,000.

A spokesman for the auctioneers said
the owners of the coin, who wanted to
remain anonymous, had no idea it was
of any value.

They took it to the valuation day on the
off-chance it might be of interest.

"This is our personal record price
achieved for a single coin at auction,
and it is a great result for the couple
who own it," the spokesman said.

The coin is thought to have found its
way to Anglo-Saxon England through trade.
