Gosh, only $400 a pop for maybe $150 worth of silver. Sounds like a bargain to
good to pass on!

APMEX is accepting orders now at $1400 per set of 5, which is still
about a 90% markup over melt. Note that the announced mintages are
quite low -- 33,000 per design for the "bullion" version and 27,000
per design for the yet unpriced "numismatic” version.

For comparison, the 1995-W ASE had a mintage of 30,125.

Two things are obvious to me. The first is that these hockey pucks
will never trade as bullion. The second is that the National Park
Service and their licensed gift shops, who had first crack at these
coins, are now kicking themselves over their lost opportunity.

I'm amazed that the Mint can get the vast volume of silver that it
needs for the ASE program plus the Hockey Pucks series. Some people
at the Mint have to be developing better muscle tone handling all that
silver.

The market pricing of the 1995-W ASE is difficult to understand. This
is not entirely sour grapes, I had two of them and did well. I would
expect a long-run "fade" on the price of them, but that still hasn't
happened too any great degree.

Over the last decade, about the only areas of growth in silver usage
are for coins, medals, and backing for exchange-traded silver shares.
The shift from film-based to digital photography alone frees up over
a hundred million ounces of silver a year.

And I assume you've seen the joke letter from the Mint:

Thanks, I hadn't. It’s especially amusing since the Mint hasn’t
yet set a random for its own “numismatic” versions. To paraphrase
Captain Renault: "I'm shocked, shocked, to find that profiteering is
going on in here!"

APMex sold out of its initial traunch of 1,000 sets in 19 hours,
which means they probably could have set the price even higher.
Can you really blame them for taking a cut of what’s likely to be,
at least for a while, a wildly speculative market?

I bought one of those 1,000 sets, which in retrospect was a lose-
lose move. By spring, I’ll either be kicking myself for buying
into the hype or I’ll be kicking myself for not buying 5 sets.
