Reminds me of that old Star Trek episode where Frank Gorshin was 1/2

That's always a dicey issue when people are described (or describe
themselves) with those hyphenated descriptors. We all have ancestral roots
in other countries, so theoretically we could all be called _____-Americans.
Seems difficult to understand for some why an American citizen would still
want to be so identified with another country, but some do. I do see the
terms applied more to groups of Americans who recently came from another
country than to individuals who have been here for generations. I believe
the use of the term African-American is more of an awkward attempt to come
up with an acceptable term to describe people of color, most of whom would
have to go back 150-200 years to find their African ancestor.
When I was growing in New England there were lots of Italian-American,
Portuguese-American, Franco-American, etc. clubs where recent immigrants
could fraternize and socialize with each other. Not that many of this type
club left anymore, probably because the original immigrants have passed away
and their descendants don't identify as strongly with the Old Country, nor
are they treated as poorly as their immigrant grandfather might have been.

That's true. He's a Muslim mulatto (clinging to one and belonging to
none). He's not even a natural citizen of the United States (whatever
that means today), but what tickles me is that even militant blacks
embrace him as one of their own -- like they won a victory against a

Here in the US we still have the one drop rule of course. And we call, and
they call themselves African- Americans, who decended from slaves and have
all of the accumulated baggage of that. But Obama being called an AA is
wrong, in that context, he bypassed all that. A white man from Pretoria, who
immigrates and becomes an American Citizen would not be called an AA. In
fact "hyphenated American" was decried by Teddy Roosevelt in 1915. And used
earlier in the 20th century as a ephithet for people who were not
all-American.

I have a friend who was born in South Africa, emigrated to the US with
his parents when he was 3 years old, and prides himself as being a
"White African-American". To his way of thinking, he is more of an
African-American than 99% of those who call themselves AA. To be
hyphenated, you have to be born in another country, then gain US
citizenship. Not 2nd generation or more.
