I assume it's not just me, but did eBay just change its auction search
listing format again? It looks like thay no longer show the postage amount
next to the bid amount-- unless the seller selected their Free Shipping
option. And as a minor irritant, if I select an auction halfway down the
list page to display, I am returned to the top of the original list page
when I backpage. It used to return me to my place in the list.

I asked if this might be only me because I just finished a major "clean"
on my computer system and as a result I had to restructure a few things that
changed their appearance. I thought eBay might have been one of them, but
maybe they made their change at the same time as my housecleaning.

Some time ago someone else complained of this, so I checked and found that
it was happening to me as well. That went on for a number of days.

But I checked again just now and do not find the problem.

Ebay works in mysterious ways, it seems.

Hmmm. I just checked eBay again and found that by clicking on the
<customize view> link at the top of the search results list, I could elect
to display the shipping cost. Apparently the shipping cost had somehow
become "deselected" when I cleaned things up. I still haven't figured out
how to return to my place on the results list after selecting an auction to
examine. Maybe it will clear itself up after awhile like things did for
you. Otherwise, annoying.

When you go back, is it in the same window as before or is IE opening
a new window? If it's a new window, maybe the page and cursor
locations are lost when you go back to the the first view? There's a
setting in the Preferences section to open new new pages in a separate
window each time or reuse the one you already have open.

I use the back-arrow a lot to go back to the original page rather than
clicking a link on the new page to go back to what I was previously
viewing. That seems to preserve the cursor position unless a page has
expired.

Another annoyance is that when looking at pages of search results the cursor
appears in the area where the search words were typed in and to go down a
page the page has to be clicked on first, after looking at item and going
back to the search results again it's back inside the annoying area again.

It's been like this for months and I had expected it to be fixed by now.

If I have a list of 30 or so results that match my search and I scroll down
to the 20th one and open it, when I use the back arrow I am brought back to
the page (same window) I came from, but at the top of the list. Then I have
to scroll back down to that 20th auction and continue my scan. Before this
past weekend I was returned to the place on the list page where the 20th
auction link was. I suspect this particular quirk has something to do with
my computer "cleansing" rather than with eBay itself-- I also lost all my
remembered eBay search terms and have had to reenter them one at a time as I
remember them.

It seems you do not see the shipping amount unless you select to sort
items by price+shipping.

When I open auctions I just go down the list and open anything I find
interesting in its own tab. With Firefox you just right click on the
link.

I get returned to the previous page position so it definitely sounds
like it's a new problem under the hood. What do you mean by
"cleansing"? Was this a security "high colonic" to root out malware?
If you had to do a system restore to the original state then yes, all
your painstakingly accumulated configurations have gone bye-bye.
Backing up your data document files and reloading them wouldn't have
saved these kinds of settings.

The only setting I can find that might affect this is: Under the IE
Tools menu select Internet Options. Under the General tab hit the
Settings button. If you've selected to check for new Internet pages
"Every visit to the page" change that to "Automatically". Then see if
you get back-arrowed to the previous page position. It's a long shot
in the dark but if that doesn't work then it probably is a really
obscure setting somewhere that only a guru knows about. Maybe someone
on the Microsoft forums can help.

As to saved searches, PC Magazine has a great little utility called
AutoWhat that allows you to manage your AutoComplete fields. (Such as
the doubled-clicked drop-down lists that appear under a field you must
fill in.) Your e-Bay searches *may* be stored there on your system.
It's worth getting AutoWhat just to see what private data of yours is
stored in AutoComplete. You can delete obsolete values (like the
zillions of Google searches that you only used once) or manually add
new ones. I don't know yet whether it works on Vista (if not, I
really, really hope they update it so I can put it on my other PC) but
it works on XP.

I used CCleaner to clean up my system which has been running pretty slow
lately ("Mommm!! My computer used to be FAST!").
There were no real problems but things did seem to speed up a bit afterward.
I also run AVG and AdAware so my system has always been pretty clear of
intruders. No System Restore was required.

The saved eBay search terms work okay again. Once I type in search terms
and search on them, they will show up again in a drop-down list whenever I
enter the first letter. The ones I were saved there disappeared after the
cleaning, so I had to start over. Like cleaning the basement, I'm throwing
out things I hadn't used in a while, so I can live with it.

Thankfully, from what I've heard, I don't have Vista and have enjoyed the
iterations of XP so far.

And thanks for your helpful suggestions.

After a few checks, it seems to be happening just with the eBay search
results list. Kicks me back to the top each time I back-key. Maybe it will
correct itself somehow.

I've had anomalies disappear on their own, too, but usually it's after
a reboot resets something internally. (Sometimes it takes two
reboots.) The strange part is that it happens only on scrolling e-Bay
lists. You're getting your saved searches back so that "remember me"
feature isn't broken, you just lost the previous values.

I doubt that it will cure itself. In addition to the MS forums, you
might post it in the e-Bay forums to see if anyone has had a similar
problem with their e-Bay screen scrolling. I sent it to a PC World
tech blog, will let you know if anyone there has an answer.

Thanks. It's certainly something I can live with, in the great scheme of
things. It just bugs me as to what caused it. It will probably bug me more
if it suddenly corrects itself. I have become convinced though that eBay
did something to tweak the appearance of its search results page the same
weekend I cleaned my computer. Now there have generated an irritating line
of "Related searches" at the top of the page below the [Find] window, in
which the suggested terms usually bear no relation at all to the term you
searched on.

The few times I've used an MS forum to look for an solution to a problem, I
have been reminded of how some newbies to this newsgroup must feel when they
post a common question and get the usual assortment of replies. Any more, I
just lurk.

I think I finally figured out what has happened here. Ebay has indeed made
(unannounced?) changes in its Search Results page. One of the changes
involves a list of eBay's own clueless suggestions that drops down as you
begin typing your search term. At the bottom of this list is a box you can
check to "Hide eBay Suggestions". After some experimenting, here's what I
found:

If you choose to allow these eBay suggestions (a little link will appear at
the right end of the main search window)--

** Your own search terms will NOT be saved. Instead, Ebay's
suggestions will appear each time in a drop down list.
** If you scroll to an auction near the end of the page and click
on it, you will be returned to that spot when you back-key.

If you choose the "Hide eBay Suggestions" option--

** Your previous search terms, according to their first letter,
will appear in a drop down list.
** You will be returned to the top of the search page, regardless
of how far down you were when you selected an auction.

This is what seems to be happening today. Who knows what will happen
tomorrow. If anyone has uncovered any other pesky differences, please share
them.

These new fangled web browsers support tabs. I do a 'right-click->Open in

Hey look at that - I still have my place in the search results!

I have Vista 64 bit. No problems, really. My printer doesn't act properly
all the time but that is because Lexmark declined to provide a full featured
driver for Vista. That is not Vista's fault. I blame Lexmark and bought an
HP. The Lexmark is over five years old anyway. My new printer is way
better. I have no idea what all the whining and fuss is about. Vista works
great for me.

Okay, maybe we all do things a bit differently. I have one bookmark that
takes me directly to the eBay category for US Beer Cans (no comments,
please) because I happen to be interested in those. From there, I use the
search box at the top of the page. When I type the first letter of a word,
any other terms in my search history (70-80 terms) that begin with that
letter appear in a dropdown list. Any new term will be saved to that list.
I can select any from there. But when I display a list of auctions and
select one I have to scroll down to, I won't be returned to that spot when I
back arrow out of the auction. Instead, I will be returned to the top of
the auction list and will have to scroll back down to where I left off if I
want to continue from there.

On the other hand, if I select the new option in the search box to let eBay
generate suggestions as I type the first letter or two (usually useless
suggestions), whatever search term I spell out will NOT be saved and I'll
have to retype the word or words again every time. Also, if I view a
category list of auctions and select one near the bottom, I WILL be returned
to that spot when I leave the auction (with that eBay suggestion thingy
selected).

This has worked conveniently for me for many years and I'm probably too old
to change without experiencing serious health issues. So now, I put up with
not being returned to where I leave off in favor of having all my prior
search terms accessible by typing the first letter.

one overly-muscular left index finger.

And say, it's good to see another left-hander in high office. Seems like an
inordinate number of our presidents have been left-handers lately--
reportedly six now during my own lifetime, but only two before that. It was
inconvenient enough growing up in the 1940's as a left hander, so I can just
imagine the pressure on parents and children before that. No wonder there
was only one left-handed president before Hoover.

I don't bother with typing anything in or working from dropdown lists. That does
nothing but waste time.

I have a file with all my eBay search strings in it. I open it on the left of my
desktop, and then drag one at a time into an open browser window. From that window I
click on any auctions from that search string of interest, and then click back to the
list of auctions. Once I have exhausted that particular search, I drag the next one
over from my open file.

I never have to do anything more than point and click to do all my auction searches,
never having to type anything into the keypad.

What could be easier than that?

If you are having trouble going backwards, don't. Leave your list open, and then
drag any interesting auctions into a second browser window. That way you never have
to click backwards.

Saving your input is a browser feature, not an eBay search feature. Both IE

From my experience, when you type the first letter in the search window, a
little yellow arrow box [Show Suggestions] will appear at the far right of

I had no idea this feature even existed in eBay!

Ah, for the good ol' days when we had it both ways.

Using bookmarks would entail using multiple clicks and take more time. I only have
about 30 different daily eBay searches , which easily display all at once in the open
file on the left of my desktop.

That's what I've always done, initially getting into the habit when I
had dial-up. I could have several pages loading in the background
while I continued to look through the search results. When I switched
to broadband I just could not break the habit of opening multiple
auctions at the same time. Still seems faster.
