James Berry won the competition to design the reverses of New
Zealand's first decimal coins, which were released in 1967. However,
20 years earlier, he produced these sketches of what a decimal coinage
for New Zealand might look like. His portrait of King George VI looks
more like Cary Grant(!), but some of the designs prefigure his actual
