Springpatch coin show 7/24/2011

yesterday. This show takes place three times a year, well-established
show, draws a lot of dealers/ weekend warriors out of the STL area:
People showed up early, good show "buzz" in the room by 9:30 AM. But
I've seen bigger crowds at this show than what was there yesterday.
If you couldn't get through the aisles, it was because of bad manners
(pretty common really) not the crunch of a large number of people.
Lots and lots of silver available in one ounce form, some five and ten
ounce bars. Bigger bars not to be seen. Only saw a single set of the
2010 ATB five ouncers, didn't see any 2011 ATB five ouncers.
Gold availability seemed about what you normally see. Not a ton of
it, but it was there.
There was lots and lots of good world stuff and the prices were very
reasonable and lower than ebay. For instance, I bought a nice George
II shilling, 1745 LIMA, MOL fine condition @ $23. That may not sound
great to some, but the coin is O.K.
The high priced slabbed Morgans came to the show with the dealers and
seemingly went right back home with them as well.
Several of the more marginal dealers were offering quantities of some
silver dollar-sized copper medals in a prooflike finish. Offerred as
an inexpensive collectible. Seemed to be Generic U.S. or Patriotic
designs, these things didn't look like anything of much interest to
me.
In Central Illinois, there has been a big turnover in the dealer ranks
in the last few years. Our old timers are mostly gone, lots of
younger dealer faces.
Just some observations on a 60 table show...

I bought a bunch of decent world coins in the $5 to $25 range,
including a 38 mm Nappy & Jefferson medal from the 1904 STL World's
Fair (the one you alawys see, but the gilt was nicer than normal).
Coins from Vatican, Russia, and England.
Then I bought five 2011 ASE from a lady dealer from Peoria. Priced at
just over $43 each. Like I told her "Someday, we're either gonna look
like geniuses or ninnies at that price, I don't know which it will
be".
