Retailers fight economic recession with pesetas

WHAT started off as a sales gimmick during the
Christmas period and the January sales at
Almeria's Nueva Andalucia, the pesetillas
escondias (hidden pesetas) campaign has been
so successful, it is set to continue until the
end of 2009. The promotion was organised by
retailers' association CENA as a means of
encouraging trade during these difficult times.
The mechanics of the promotion are
simple: retailers who subscribe to the
scheme can accept coins and banknotes in
pesetas for payment of goods. Since
December 17, more than four million pesetas
have been collected. "It was so successful
we decided to carry the promotion on,"
explains Juan Moreno, CENA's President, to
the Euro Weekly News.
Moreno said the idea came about after seeing
a documentary which revealed that around
300,000 pesetas remain 'hidden' in people's
homes. Whilst pesetas have not been accepted
since 2002, after the introduction of the
euro in 1999, peseta notes and coins that
were legal tender on December 31, 2001,
remain exchangeable indefinitely at any
branch of the Spanish central bank.
"We accept coins from 1998 to 2001 and
banknotes from 1941 onwards. However, anyone
with older banknotes can come along. We will
send them to the central bank, and if they
confirm they are still exchangeable they can
use them; if not, we will simply return the
notes to their owners. We had one customer
who had travelled 160 kilometres to Almeria
for some prior engagement, who spent 44,000
pesetas. We are finding that customers who
happen to be coming to Almeria are taking
the opportunity to dig out their old pesetas,
and are coming along to spend them,"
said Moreno.
