Yep. The head breaks through the beads at the top of the coin. Its
genuine 1916.

almost like saying "This coin was once a brilliant uncirculated gem."

I have been mulling this over all day now. What would I pay for a authentic
1916 SLQ in AG3 or lower condition? To be honest, I keep going back and
forth. It IS one of the precious 52,000 SLQs minted, but on the other hand
it's a slug now. I think I'd throw $100 at it without thinking, but I'm
pretty sure I'm not going for the ~$2K it will get. I just don't know what I
would do. Hmm....

I have the same problem with low-grade 1873 Doubled LIBERTY Indian cents,
1916 Doubled Die nickels and 1918/7 overdate nickels and quarters. All of
these can be attributed by secondary diagnostics. But what's the point? I
buy a coin for its primary pick-up point, which is usually, but not always,
the date and/or mintmark, and that's where the entire payload resides. A
dateless chain cent is quite another thing, as it is collected as much for
its unique design as for the readability of its date numerals, so a worn
example can still bring $4k or more.

I recently abandoned all thoughts of adding a 1922 "no D" to my XF or better
Lincoln set, mainly because of its horribly worn obverse appearance even in
high circulated grades. It just wouldn't match. Ane there's the price, of
course. I had already satisfied myself that I wouldn't include any of
those pesky doubled die wheat cents that seem to have become fixtures in
most price guides over the past decade or two. As much as I hate having one
empty hole in an album, I think I probably would get more enjoyment out of
putting my money toward a nice MS64 1922-D Lincoln rathert han a G4 1922 "no
D", and maybe a pair of MS65 1917 Type I SLQ's over an AG3 1916 at the same
price. I'll admit, I used to feel just the opposite.

Ira has sold many a circulated beauty of a 22-Plain over the past few years.
I'd buy one of his PCGS XF45s in a heartbeat. But there's the price, of
course. 8>)

The obverse of an XF45 generally looks much better than a VG, plus it's that
weakness that created the variety in the first place. But then there's the
price, of course. 8>(
