Hard to believe that the Seated Liberty dollar could be considered "one
of the more popular series of American coins....". Maybe by some of the
deeper-pocket collectors, but doubtful most of the "Main Street collectors".
.
Maybe if one offers that most early coin series are popular with some
collectors, it could be said that the Seated Liberty dollar is one of them.
Otherwise, I would have guessed that this particular series was beyond the
means and scope of most "series" collectors, what with few of the dates
available for less than $300 in Fine condition or $2,000 in MS60. Of
interest to type collectors, to be sure, but only the well heeled could hope
to look at this as a popular series to collect.

I don't believe it really is one of the most popular US coin series.
They are very nice looking coins for sure but the number of date and
mintmark collectors I would imagine are very few due to the cost.

I own just one an 1847 in VF condition from a Bowers and Merena
auction years ago when they were much
cheaper than today.

A few years ago I found a couple nice affordable XF examples, each with a
small hole, that I admire just as much as perfect ones costing ten times as
much. These SL dollars may be popular to ogle for many of us, but not as a
series to collect.

they started going high in the 70's, before that they weren't bad.
late 80's redbook shows many for $100 in vg. not too bad.

If you want to go all the way back into the 1970's and 80's, lots of today's
early date expensive coins could be had for that price in low grades. And
if you DO happen to go back there, please leave room for me.
