In the past where ebay has ended my auctions, when I have mentioned
that fact when I have relisted the auction, the relisted auction has
been ended for "disparaging eBay." I think it's relevant to mention
that, since people noticing the same coin that they bid on previously
might think that I ended the first auction because it was not bringing
enough money, and thus be hesitant to bid on it again.
(I will be attending a local auction tomorrow morning, with several lots
of reasonably heavy containers of Victorian era and earlier copper
coinage, quite probably unpicked-through. I wonder what's in there ...)

And the some of the sellers were really angry...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IHY0r3Sn9rc
Ebay's response was to cancel the 2009 event.
If you'll crack it open and dip it to possibly make it blast white, I might
place a bid. Since a 1941-S MS66FB is priced by PCGS at less than your
starting bid, I'd have to have more than your word about how "eagerly
sought" this is before I'd bid. It doesn't look proof-like from your
photos. If it had rated an "FB" on the slab, that might have helped, too.
Otherwise, you can often find a beautiful blast white PCGS MS66FB 1941-S on
eBay for half of what you're asking.
Hope you get lucky.
I routinely search on specific items in various categories on eBay and I
haven't noticed any sharp reduction in the number of auctions over the past
year. Before charging "sellers are leaving in droves", you might do a bit
more comprehensive research first. Attendance levels at an eBay convention
seem to have no bearing on eBay auction activity.
What is of some interest is how many visitors are they getting now compared
to then. Quantcast is great for this.
http://www.quantcast.com/ebay.com#traffic
It looks like traffic peaked on March 11, 2006. Traffic has steadily
declined since a year ago. Right now we are in a minor bump upwards - no
doubt due to the various pagan holidays being celebrated now that were
reinvented by Christians a long time ago.
Since Fwankie admits he's only seen 3 1941S dimes (rather odd for
someone who claims he's been a dealer practically since birth), he's
hardly someone who I would turn to for advice on grading said dime.
I do believe he ment in NGC MS66.
______
Frank's is in an NGC slab. Not even labeled as FB, let alone PL, but
supposedly a premium catch, according to Frank's opinion. I cited the
MS66FB price from the PCGS guide, which should be similar to if not higher
than NGC. Six of one..........
Frank's coin wasn't labeled as FB although it looks like it coulda-shoulda
been. PCGS says $80 for a MS66FB and only $30 for a non-FB MS66. Frank has
an $85 opener with a BIN at $115. I guess he must be looking to become a
market-maker for PL Mercuries. No bids yet with 7 days to go. I'm sure he
knows more about the coin business than I do, but as a customer, I'd prefer
a bright PCGS MS66 at $30 or an FB at $80 anyday, what with no track record
for slabbed PL Mercuries that aren't labeled as such.

I think I will. The 41-S in Prooflike is known to specialists, and
known to be rare. Here is another
one on eBay, only partially PL on the reverse, for more than my price:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=110320207310
I was being facetious when I suggested to dip the coin to make it blast
white. Especially a "recent" Mercury dime. But yes, I do like my coins to
look like that as opposed to some of the Roosevelt dimes in the
recently-advertised auction of the "best ever" set of Roosevelts. No way a
set of coins minted while I've been alive should have toned like that on
their own. But then what do I know besides what I like.
Old holder or not, touting the coin as "unusual" and "proof-like" and asking
a premium price for it is not going to wash for most people when it isn't
recorded as such on the slab. If he truly feels it is an exceptional coin
worth twice book for a "non-PL" example, he should resubmit it to NGC or
PCGS to get that cherished blessing in print on the label. THEN maybe he's
got something. Meanwhile, it just meaningless seller hype.

Ebay makes their money on Paypal and final value fees. Many of these
listings are
5¢ media listings, or 35¢ per month fixed price, but will not end in
sales. Traffic is way down

If they have less traffic, the ones that are there must be buying more.

Recent promotions have changed the rates of BIN vs. normal auction listings, but the
overall sell-thru rate remains steady around 40%.

Plus they introduced the 35 cent, 30 day listings not too long ago. Some of
that growth has to be due to that. BIN listings now stay around 4x as long
and they are cheap to list. The FVFs for BINs are near criminal so those
listings get their priced jacked up to compensate. As a result of their
high price they stay listed longer.
If the coin is such a gem, crack it out and resubmit it. Get a CAC
sticker.
Otherwise all we have is unsubstantiated dealer hyperbole.

What about overall revenue? They jacked up their FVF fees, possibly to
compensate for loss of revenue. Their stock isn't very special anymore.
Then again, what stock is?
________________
Just shows you can't rely only on statistics. The decreasing number of
eBay's "unique visitors" or the "time spent per user" doesn't reflect the
number of ebay auctions. Check out the real world. You won't see the sky
falling. The number of auctions in the one eBay collectible category I
always check out first has fluctuated between about 2800 and 3200 auctions
during the past year, the higher number usually occurring on weekends. If I
never read the media, I would never have suspected we're in a lousy economy
based on the number of eBay auctions.
If it's that unusual and desireable but rests in an older holder that
doesn't reflect its true scarcity, wouldn't an experienced dealer be eager
to resubmit it either to NGC or PCGS where the full bands and proof-like
surface could be documented on the label? Presuming of course that the TPG
service would agree with your "proof-like" opinion.

And like yours, still unsold at its BIN-only price. But fear not, there
are registry set fanatics lurking everywhere. We'll see what they think.
I'd rather double my money without the paying a regrade fee, postage
both ways and a 30 day wait. If the buyer wants to
do that, they have a good chance of doubling their money, too.
Here's a 1941-S MS66 that sold for $252 with the PL on the label (and
bands no better than on mine)

Yet we only have your assertion and some fuzzy, out of focus scans of
the coin in question to judge this paragon of the minter's art.
And your reputation for prevarication is well known.

EBAY Revenue over the last 4 quarters is essentially flat, and operating
profit is down in each of the last three quarters.
http://finance.yahoo.com/q/is?s=EBAY
According to their last 10-Q statement, year-to-year active users were up
3%, but gross merchandise volume was down 1%. I suggest you read the
statement and the footnotes to understand their definition of those terms.

> Then again, what stock is?
If I could have consistently and successfully predicted what stocks
would have been "very special" over even a few months time, either
positively or negatively, I would have a _much_ nicer coin collection.

Perhaps you need new glasses, or a better monitor.
Perhaps you need to take better pictures, Provasicko.
Better get your "staff" to work on that, you pimple.
Know any viable alternatives?
I've taken a look a Amazon.
JAM
> Perhaps you need new glasses, or a better monitor.
It's not our monitors. Your pictures in that listing are terrible, full of digital
artifacts.
They look a bit better if reduced. At 1/3rd to 1/2 size I do see a
proof-like look, esp. on the reverse. But I had to load the image into
PSP and manually resize it.
I rescaled it and added an additional image. The new version of ebay
page view automatically scales the images, as does IE if you
have it in the default setting to automatically resize the image.
The picture is of very low quality, with the low price of digital cameras
there's no excuse. Billy
Nothing is ever your fault, right Fwankie?
Pictures look shitty? Blame eBay or Microsoft.
Got an auction cancelled? Blame your enemies.
Got bounced from eBay? Guess it was another conspiracy.
Checking back, it has been at least 8 years you've been whining here in
RCB and other groups about the vast conspiracy that's out to ruin your
business.
Ask yourself why people dislike you so much, Fwankie.
