The same thread (elsewhere) points out that most working men (those
who actually perform the necessary physical labor in our society) see
very little of their own money, so beer (and football games) is (are)
actually what keeps them coming into work, day in and day out.

If Beer hadn't been discovered, there probably never would have been
any need for coins, either.

I think they minted English silver pennies for three or four centuries
ONLY for the purpose of exchanging pots of ale. There wasn't much
else that you could use money for back then.

I have a couple of beer tokens too, one is German or German-American
(I forget which).

I have rather more elongated German ten pfennings from the Hofbrauhaus
in Munich. These are fairly recent and feature an engraving of a
large stein with a head of foam on it.

I've been trying to save different beer-related CWT's as well as the more
modern encased cents from smaller regional breweries. US tokens are as much
as I can handle right now.

My dilema is that I get distracted too easily, jumping from one interest to
another, resulting in quite a few "partial" collections. Lately I have
become infatuated with the 1978 Austrian 100 schilling coin that
commemorates the 700th Anniversary of the Battle of Durnkrut and
Jedenspeigen. The obverse detail looks so much like that of an early thaler
that I can't resist accumulating a few whenever I can find one priced a
little more than its silver content (.4924oz). Otherwise, the really
attractive early thalers are out of my reach, plus I don't have the skills
to ID a counterfeit and wouldn't want one in a slab.

The Austrian Mint turns out some really beautiful items, if the pictures I see
in Coin World are fair representations of their work.
Had I the money to spare from my other collecting endeavors, I'd buy some of
their commemorative coins, which are very impressive.
Anybody want to buy some old (but not TOO old) Topps NBA cards?
