> Subject: Warning on fake eBay coins
That's redundant. "warning on eBay coins" suffices.
And I'm speaking as someone who was a casual coin collector,
but bailed from that field around Y2K.
As I wrote this, that listing was still up, although one of the
two others had been pulled. eBay's eagle-eyed coin cops
are clearly on the case.
With the rising quality of PRC fakes, including fake slabs,
I can't imagine buying any items with a numismatic premium
on eBay (and because the alloys are faked, too, buying
bullion-grade is just as risky). Do you coin dealers realize that
coin collecting cannot survive this tsunami of clones, however clumsy?
> ... poor quality counterfeit 1889-CC Morgan listed as genuine.
At least it's a reproduction of an actual coin. Many eBay fakes
are complete fictions.
> Check out the rather dreadful morphology and that Chinese CC mintmark.
Comparing the listing photos to the ANA Grading Standards
(4th ed.), nothing really jumps out. Do you have to be a PCGS
grader to safely bid on coins on eBay?
I suspect that many of these sellers don't even know they are
selling fakes. And they get bids. Many of the buyers will never
know they bought fakes (their heirs will find out when they try
to cash in).
I wonder if anything can be done about this. Whatever steps
might be taken, debunking individual listings on AMOE is
easily the least effective thing to do.

Boy, you can't pull anything over on these
coin dealers, can ya...
Coin sales have been banned on eBay.
Notice came out this morning. Existing
listings will be allowed to expire.
No new listings.
> These people are making fun of coin dealers for claiming that
> "BC" would actually be part of the inscription of an ancient coin,
> yet their lack of knowledge makes THEM the actual fools.>
Lumpy keeps using the BC gag because people keep falling for it,
including some self-appointed coin experts. Everyone knows that
they didn't use "BC" dates, due to the off-by-one problem, the
disagreement on whether there would be a year zero or a year
one. This is the famous Y0K problem.
But if you listed a "Gem BU" 224BC coin on eBay, someone
would buy it.
Apparently, stamping dates on coins based on a perpetual
calendar didn't really start until 1234 AD. There were a few
earlier attempts, evidently based on dynasty year, as early
as 78 BC, but more usually ancient coins either had no numerical
date, or it was the current monarchy year.
Doesn't really matter any more since, as eBay announced 2 days ago,
they will no longer accept new listings for coin sales. Allow the
current listings to expire, no new listings.

Dunno about Al, but it was a lot harder for me back then ...
Keeping up a mailing list, printing up catalogs, mailing
them (bulk rate permit at one time ... over 1,000 customers

traveling to shows almost every weekend ... it wuz both
very expensive and quite exhausting.
Now, I can sell stuff on eBay whilst sitting in my office

selling stuff via my website is even cheaper, but eBay is

Approved August 1967 by the ANA Board of Governors; revised March 2002.
As an ANA member dealer, I agree to comply with the following principles:
•To comply with the ANA Member Code of Ethics.
•To purchase and sell numismatic items at prices commensurate with a
reasonable return to the seller and for a reasonable return on my investment
with regards to the then prevailing rate.
•To furnish my clientele with advice on numismatic information to the best

•To not knowingly handle for resale forgeries, counterfeits, unmarked

•To frequently publish my statement of return privileges, which will allow

material for a refund, except bullion or bullion-related material may not be
returned for a refund. Said period of time shall not be less than fifteen

?In an auction sale of consigned material, the return privilege period may
be made available only to mail bidders, and the period for the return of
such material may be limited to five (5) days from the mail bidder’s receipt

such material or my attempted delivery of my invoice therefor, whichever
time period shall be the earlier.
?Whether or not an item has been returned within the limited return period,
a dealer may be subject to expulsion or other disciplinary action for
a) the intentional sale of any counterfeit item or any item with an altered
date or mintmark;
b) the intentional misrepresentation as to the grade of any item; or
c) the failure or refusal to provide a refund or replacement for any item
referred to in a) or b) preceding, whether or not the sale or
misrepresentation was intentional. Anything herein to the contrary
notwithstanding, I shall have the right to enforce my written terms of sale
furnished to a customer or the written provisions of my contract with a
customer, even if such terms and/or provisions restrict or prohibit the
return of numismatic material, contrary to the return privilege provisions
set forth herein.
However, said terms and provisions may not provide a time limit for the
return of a counterfeit coin unless I have informed my customer that a coin
may not be genuine and he/she has agreed that the coin cannot be returned to
me for a refund in the event it is determined to be counterfeit.
•To abide by all local, state and federal laws in all numismatic matters and
to assist in the prosecution of violators of the law in this respect.
•To recognize and respect my own contracts and business dealings and those
of fellow members of the Association.

Interesting. I believe I have been here since that time and never had a
clue this was anything other than an unmoderated usenet group.
That is because Bruno does nothing in moderation.
RCC as a whole, and a lot of posters here were sued by Alan Hagar, the
owner of ACG, a lower tier TPG service because of what was said here.
Along with RCC and RCC posters, the ANA itself was brought into the
law suit as it was then erroneously named by Hagar as an 'official'
ANA club, which it never was. RCC was one of the first to be dropped
from the suit.
I met a lot of RCC folks at that meeting, unfortunately I don't
believe any of them still post here. Eric Tillery, Jorg Lueke etc. I
do know for fact that many do lurk here but don't post. Gary Lewis
being one of them!

Hey, this is AMERICA! Anyone can sue anyone anytime for anything,

among others. Google 1:04-cv-02213-RWR for more gory details in

The lawsuite was eventually dropped, but not until after numerous people
paid numerous lawyers numerous amounts of money ...)

Gary Lewis did pay dues for RCC to become an ANA member club so that
they would be able to get a meeting room at ANA shows.
What is your problem with him that you constantly belittle him?
I think posting his toll free phone number everywhere is a very low
act because this
costs the owner money every time they get a call.
I wonder if this is really the Lumpy Music guy and not someome trying
to get Lumpy into
trouble because he has made many disparaging remarks against various
people which would
have legal liability.
-------------
So this is what made RCC an "official ANA online club"? If so, there must
be many other "official ANA clubs" like EAC, etc., if all that means is that
by paying dues they get a shot at a meeting room at an ANA show. Out of
curiousity, when was the last time RCC had a meeting room at an ANA show?
Was that before or after his musical career with The Playboys?
EAC, SPMC, TAMS, etc. can all be ANA "club" members since they are truly
"clubs" (they have constitutions/bylaws, maintain membership lists, hold
elections, have officers, issue publications, etc.). They even get to
nominate candidates and vote in ANA elections if two of their officers
sign the nomination form / ballot.
I find it hard to believe that R.C.C meets any kind of definition of a
"club". The fact that Gary paid dues "for r.c.c" out of his own pocket
is fairly meaningless unless he was authorized by the
Rec.Collecting.Coins Board of Directors to do so. (TINR.C.CBoD ...).
I suspect that the ANA eventually rejected the r.c.c membership
application as "insufficient" since it could not have been signed by two
of the club's "officers".
Does anybody know the membership number of r.c.c and it's status??
(And FWIW I did attend one of the r.c.c "meetings" at an ANA show ...
not in New York, but I disremember where. IIRC, Gary showed up
initially but ducked out immediately to a Board meeting. I remember
Anka being there, and a few other people (one possibly Nick Knight), but
I don't think anybody took roll or meeting minutes, or even "ran" the
meeting for that matter ...
The term "career" is a vast overstatement.
So is "musical".

Yeah. If you go back and do the research you will find it was the
reach-around creativity conference usenet group. Eventually it became
