Ah, remember the days before the advent of the smooth but oh so bland
euro coinage? Here's a homely old piece from Belgium dated 1980, but
actually quite stylish in its way, and with a nice bit of character -
just the sort of stuff that has been lost under the new system. Of all
the euro coins that have been issued to date, which one could you
(would you) actually call a classic? None of them, for my money...

Yes, the past is another country; they do things differently there.

Yes, I like the Greek and Italian sets too, but there's just something
about the euro format that doesn't do it for me, and I can't quite put
my finger on it. I have the Cyprus set too, but the one thing that
bugs me is the tendency to have only either one or three designs per
set. The Greeks, Italians and Austrians all have one design per coin
though, which is ideal. Strangely, I've heard that the inhabitants of
Euroland prefer the one-design sets, as they're easier to recognise.

I like the Greek and the Italian Euro coins also. And I also like the
French ones. In fact, when they first came out, I bought a set of each--the
only ones I have in my collection.
