Prison for theft of gold, coins

A Modesto man was sentenced Monday to five years in
prison for possession of gold nuggets authorities
say he stole from the U.S. mail and possession
of methamphetamine.
Michael Parreira Rego, 26, pleaded guilty in
September. According to Assistant U.S. Attorney
Michelle Rodriguez, who prosecuted the case,
Rego was driving through Modesto in January
when a police officer pulled him over for
driving on a suspended license. Rego threw
gold nuggets and coins and a bag of
methamphetamine packaged for sale from his
vehicle.
The gold and coins were identified as being
stolen from U.S. mail registry bags. He was
taken into custody at the conclusion of
Monday's hearing.
