Slightly more than a timeline actually but still just a summary. Right
now it's a Web page and will probably remain one, with no plans to
repurpose this for print, though this could change. To anybody
interested, did I miss anything important?
It's fun to think about this stuff, read about it, in books I have
here and on the Web (there are a number of other timelines on the Web,
other sites too of course with content related to this). I'm having
fun anyway. The further back in time you go, the more interesting it
gets. <g>
I started this in building a little site on the world's first coins,
an elaboration of a previous article I wrote, and continued expanding
it. So, here are the most significant events in history, partly though
not exclusively from a Western, and human ..., perspective:

So the bad news is that we've all got 4 years to get our stuff
together. The good news is that in 4 years we won't have to endure
any more arguing on which way the price of gold and silver will be

Actually, the Mayan calendar is a continuos cycle. On the winter
solstice in 2012, the sun will be aligned with the center of the Milky
Way, that is all.

I just changed the birth of the Universe from 14 billion years ago to
13.7 billion years. Talk about power! Or delusions of it. <g> Thanks
for the email suggesting this. I had previously used the 14 billion
figure as a fairly broad approximation, since estimates seem to depend
on what phenomenon you use. But more people seem to use the more
narrow approximation of 13.7 billion years than the other figures I've
seen, so I guess it makes most sense to use it as well. I have some
old coins, though none are quite this old.

pretty disasterous for the people alive at the time, as I understand it.
In fact, I think the earth had to be re-peopled after each one, with a
different type of people each time. I forget whether we are supposed to
be the fourth or the fifth people.

There is a History or Discover channel show that combines the Mayan myths
with another 19th century psychic's ramblings about the earth suddenly
slowing down its rotation around the same time. Apparently this will result
is a reshuffling of the earth's continents and oceans. The Great Lakes will
spill into the Gulf of Mexico, volcanoes will erupt everywhere, and mankind
will be dispersed into chaos and pockets of tribes.
I suppose it would be one way for the earth to reverse global warming real
quickly.
