Is it possible to take the PDF files off the CDs and use them from
your hard drive?
Yes, you can copy the SCWC catalog from the disk onto your computer's
hard drive. There is no "protection" which prevents this.
It's not a bad feature, although taking a PC around a bourse is
probably even more pretentious than lugging the catalogs and checking
every damn coin against its pricing. However, if one takes their PC
to a long-distance coin show (especially one where you must fly-in),
it would save taking the catalogs.
The disk is a nice addition, but I will probably always want the
printed book too.

I saw something at Books_a_million the other day called a Nook. You
can down load e-books on to it. I'm not sure if the Standard Catalog
of World Coins is available in e-book form, but it might be worth
checking out. FWIW, it is a heck of a lot lighter than a laptop "about
the size of an I-pad ". They go for around $135-245 depending on the
feature's you want. You can also load some magazines on it as well.
The lady at the counter told me that it could hold up to 1300 books.
Well I hope this is of some use to you.
