Man admits possessing gold coins stolen from mail

A 42-year-old Sacramento man pleaded guilty Tuesday to
possessing gold coins stolen from the U.S. mail.
David Allen Gibson also pleaded guilty to being a felon
in possession of a firearm, according to a news release
from the U.S. Attorney's Office.
Prosecutors said Gibson admitted that on Oct. 31 and
Nov. 8 he pawned gold coins stolen from the U.S. mail.
The coins were stolen Sept. 26 from a registered mail
bag taken from a locked U.S. Postal Service truck.
The stolen mail bag contained sports memorabilia,
cremated human remains and historic gold coins.
On Nov. 18 a search warrant was executed for Gibson's
home. Gibson, who previously was convicted of robbery,
was found to be in possession of a loaded .380-caliber
semiautomatic pistol. Some of the stolen items were
recovered, authorities said.
He faces a maximum of 15 years imprisonment, a
three-year term of supervised release and a fine of up
to $500,000 when sentenced May 26. The U.S. Postal
Inspection Service investigated the case.
