Club will appraise coins for public

CARMEL, N.Y. -- These days, people are looking
everywhere for a little extra money.
But for a few lucky folks, the answer to some of
their financial woes might be hiding in that box
of funny-looking coins they inherited from a
relative or the long-forgotten coin collection.
Last April, said Ralph Behringer of the Croton
River Numismatic Society, one person who attended
the club's free coin and stamp appraisal at the
Carmel Fire Department discovered that the 1916
Standing Liberty quarter they'd owned for years
was worth more than $6,000. Another person
learned his 1928 half-dollar commemorating the
250th anniversary of the discovery of Hawaii
had a similar value.
On Saturday, the club plans to hold another
appraisal session, and invites the public to
learn what their old coins, stamps and paper
money could be worth.
The session will be held in the fire department
meeting room at Route 52 and Vink Drive from
9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Plenty of parking is available
and the building is accessible to the handicapped.
The appraisals will be performed on a first-come,
