I never hated Reagan when he was POTUS nor do I hate him now.
I did, in fact, vote for him in 1980 when he ran against Jimmy "4 More Years of
Malaise" Carter.
My own business experienced a boom under his administration, so, at the time, I
was content to overlook his shortcomings.

I felt comfortable with him during his years as our president. However,
having been a movie-goer through most of his film career, I often found it
difficult later to separate the movie star from the president. Celebrating
his 100th birthday is a no-brainer. Revering him as some kind of savior is
a bit over the top, IMO.

time has only dimmed the memory of how big a scandal it was at the time.

The question of how his good and bad balance out will be for historians to

Anyone can say they support the Constitution. It's quite another matter
when the person at the top, who has sworn to uphold both it and the laws of
the United States, has blatant law-breaking (resulting in indictments and
convictions arising out of it) occurring in his own White House, cabinet,
and executive branch. Which, it might be argued, also did violence to the
separation of powers as mandated in said Constitution that he swore to

unrealistically massive initial tax cut caused (which had to be corrected
with 11 subsequent tax hikes). One can argue that it was money well spent
given the outcome of shortening the life of the Evil Empire; but it still
was spending money that we didn't have. Where have we heard that complaint
lately?

near as strong as the USA's.
Repressive control and the failure of communism to provide a sustainable

What is often not sighted is the fact that Reagan freed more people from
tyranny than any other human being in history. If you consider the Soviet
Union and it's eastern bloc neighbors as a gigantic prison camp populated by
hundreds of millions of people who were all freed directly by Reagan, the
greatness of this man starts to approach not other founding fathers of our
nation, but some of the great men of recorded history including biblical
history. He can truly be considered a type of Moses of our time, leading the
children of communism out of bondage. His work though is not done. Communism

Well you have me on just this one point. I was thinking of all the
charges made against Col. North and only the one childish indictment.
I do note, however, that you did not dispute the statement that the
Washington Post set out to destroy North physically, which was
obscene. Judging by the tone of your posts I have little doubt that
this attempt met with your full approval.
I didn't think you could prove that Woodward was telling the truth
about the Casey interview. He was widely accused of lying at the time
and even some of his fellow Liberals refused to defend him. (Most
Liberals, by the way, are honest people, it is just the extremists
like majorj who give Liberalism a bad name.) However, Woodward has
majorj for a boot-licking friend and for whom no lie is too small to
repeat ad nauseum. The Woodward claims were bizarre on the face of it
and merely a cheap attempt by Woodward (in the best tradition of
majorj and the Washington Post) to trash Reagan with fabricated
interviews.

1. Reagan was a serial tax raiser.
As governor of California, Reagan “signed into law the largest tax increase

3. Unemployment soared after Reagan’s 1981 tax cuts.
Unemployment jumped to 10.8 percent after Reagan enacted his much-touted tax
cut, and it took years for the rate to get back down to its previous level.
Meanwhile, income inequality exploded. Despite the myth that Reagan presided
over an era of unmatched economic boom for all Americans, Reagan
disproportionately taxed the poor and middle class, but the economic growth
of the 1980′s did little help them. “Since 1980, median household income has
risen only 30 percent, adjusted for inflation, while average incomes at the
top have tripled or quadrupled,” the New York Times’ David Leonhardt noted.
4. Reagan grew the size of the federal government tremendously.
Reagan promised “to move boldly, decisively, and quickly to control the
runaway growth of federal spending,” but federal spending “ballooned” under
Reagan. He bailed out Social Security in 1983 after attempting to privatize
it, and set up a progressive taxation system to keep it funded into the
future. He promised to cut government agencies like the Department of Energy
and Education but ended up adding one of the largest — the Department of
Veterans’ Affairs, which today has a budget of nearly $90 billion and close
to 300,000 employees. He also hiked defense spending by over $100 billion a
year to a level not seen since the height of the Vietnam war.
5. Reagan did little to fight a woman’s right to choose.
As governor of California in 1967, Reagan signed a bill to liberalize the
state’s abortion laws that “resulted in more than a million abortions.” When
Reagan ran for president, he advocated a constitutional amendment that would
have prohibited all abortions except when necessary to save the life of the
mother, but once in office, he “never seriously pursued” curbing choice.
6. Reagan was a “bellicose peacenik.”
He wrote in his memoirs that “[m]y dream…became a world free of nuclear
weapons.” “This vision stemmed from the president’s belief that the biblical
account of Armageddon prophesied nuclear war — and that apocalypse could be
averted if everyone, especially the Soviets, eliminated nuclear weapons,”
the Washington Monthly noted. And Reagan’s military buildup was meant to
crush the Soviet Union, but “also to put the United States in a stronger
position from which to establish effective arms control” for the the entire
world — a vision acted out by Regean’s vice president, George H.W. Bush,
when he became president.
7. Reagan gave amnesty to 3 million undocumented immigrants.
Reagan signed into law a bill that made any immigrant who had entered the
country before 1982 eligible for amnesty. The bill was sold as a crackdown,
but its tough sanctions on employers who hired undocumented immigrants were
removed before final passage. The bill helped 3 million people and millions
more family members gain American residency. It has since become a source of
major embarrassment for conservatives.
8. Reagan illegally funneled weapons to Iran.
Reagan and other senior U.S. officials secretly sold arms to officials in
Iran, which was subject to a an arms embargo at the time, in exchange for
American hostages. Some funds from the illegal arms sales also went to fund
anti-Communist rebels in Nicaragua — something Congress had already
prohibited the administration from doing. When the deals went public, the
Iran-Contra Affair, as it came to be know, was an enormous political scandal

9. Reagan vetoed a comprehensive anti-Apartheid act.

close relations to these fighters. In fact, Reagan’s decision to continue
the proxy war after the Soviets were willing to retreat played a direct role

Conservatives seem to be in such denial about the less flattering aspects of
Reagan; it sometimes appears as if they genuinely don’t know the truth of
his legacy. Yesterday, when liberal activist Mike Stark challenged hate
radio host Rush Limbaugh on why Reagan remains a conservative hero despite
raising taxes so many times, Limbaugh flew into a tirade and demanded,

Would you please quote the LAW that made these sales illegal? There
was a non-binding RESOLUTION put through Congress by the Far Left but
I do not know of a law to this effect. It was actually a brilliant
scheme, not only to get the hostages released but let Iran pay the
Nicaraguan rebel expenses. The sad part was that several hostages had
to endure more years of brutal treatment (welcomed by majorj, beanie,
and sid9) because a corrupt American media so hated Reagan that they
even let newsmen rot in these holes.
And why were arms supplied to Tehran by Reagan? It was to maintain the

Washington in 1787 after the Articles of Confederation didn't work
out. Lincoln established the Dept of Agriculture, First Highways in
1811, Goverment Hospitals in 1798 under Adams, All these items have
been managed or regulated by the government, mostly since the 1870s or
earlier. Social Security in 1935, Medicare in 1965. Your "stop

Hilarious. Verified? Why would anyone trust anything said by the
crazies that run Iran?
The same government that denied it was involved in the hostage-taking.
Frank believes anyone that hates the U.S. The Sick book is SICK and
virtually no one, except of course the crazy Iranians, say otherwise.
Perhaps Frank would like to defend the Iranian trial now being held
for the tourists who accidentally crossed the border and are being
held in inhumane conditions. That government has assured us, and I am
sure that Frank believes them, that these really are espionage agents
out to overthrow the wonderful people that run Iran.
