I'm sure that most single silver proof sets purchased by individual
coin collectors were opened 50 years ago.

But I believe most of the unopened proof sets being sold today come
from 100-set boxes that were purchased from the Mint by dealers in the
late 50's and early 60's?? A photo of one of the boxes can be seen

I am sure there are some scammers when it comes to unopened sets. You
just have to watch out for them, looking for things like over-inflated
prices and way too much hype.

The mark-up should not be that much. Most of the "unopened" proof sets
I have bought were only $1 or $2 more than the price of opened sets,
with 1957 being the one exception at about +$5. And the sets generally
contained nice coins. If someone did open the sets previously, then
they must have been looking for that ultra-cameo Frranklin or
soemething.
