8:15 a.m. - New Penny To Be Unveiled

The U.S. Mint is scheduled to unveil four new designs for
the penny at the Lincoln Memorial this morning.

It's all part of the commemoration of the bicentennial of
the birth of Abraham Lincoln.

The first new design is aimed at celebrating Abraham
Lincoln's earlier years spent in Kentucky, where he was
born.

Later versions of the penny will mark Lincoln's years
spent in Indiana, when he was an attorney and when he
was president.

Images of the new coins are set to be released online
later today.

The new coins will go into circulation in February.

I am very pleased with the coin featuring the Old State Capitol
Building, which is located here in Springfield. It is an impressive
old building which was completely restored just before the
sesquicentennial of Illinois (1968). It played a major role in
Lincoln's life; his law office was (and is) right across the street..
