List Auction-style FREE--any start price, all the time!
We're writing with some great news:
Starting April 19, you'll be able to list your items Auction-style FREE, at any
start price, up to 50 listings a month. Plus you can add the Buy It Now option
to these listings FREE to grab buyers in a hurry. Set the price you want and
sell it fast! This is not a limited-time special but a change in eBay Standard
fees to help you list more for FREE all the time--even those high ticket items!
Pay only if your item sells.
Also, because we know buyers take into consideration the total cost of an item,
also starting April 19, to encourage sellers to keep shipping costs low, the
Final Value Fee will be applied to the total amount of the sale--including
shipping.

Looks like those sellers who pad their shipping charges will do one of two
things:
a) lower shipping charges
b) raise shipping charges to compensate for eBay's latest money grab.
I many categories, eBay already limits what you can charge for shipping - I
wonder if that will change?
Remember when eBay used to be a fun & inexpensive place to sell junk you would
have otherwise tossed out?

Still is for me and always has been. How else can I get cash for stuff I
might otherwise have tossed out? I use eBay for that kind of thing all the
time. It's like found money. Why should I care if I can sell my junk item
for $10.00 and eBay/PayPal takes a buck cut. It's certainly worth it.
Amazing what people will pay money for.

I now envision more sellers listing items with starting bids at retail+
along with free shipping. They win if it sells and don't lose if it
doesn't.

I used to sell stuff on eBay all the time in the late 1990s.
Over the years eBay became less seller-friendly, harder to use, more regulated
and much more expensive.
I agree it's still a good place to get rid of junk you don't know what else to
do with.
And it's still a good place to find odd items and occasionally one can get a
bargain on a nice coin.
But buying coins on eBay can be treacherous, with all the counterfeits out
there.

pass through of costs...the auction company DID NOTHING TO EARN a
commission on the shipping charge.
We already cannot pass along to the buyer the cost for insurance, and
have to pay it ourselves or be responsible for the entire amount if a
package is lost.
Ebay gets 9% FVF, 2.9% for forced Paypal, 2% or more for insurance,
That puts honest sellers in the loss column from the beginning. The
only sellers who can make a living under such conditions are selling
stolen, counterfeit, or defective items.

How much value is their worldwide auction exposure to you? How would you
fare without eBay? How much would it otherwise cost you to advertise your
stuff nationally, with large color photos? PayPal isn't "forced". You pay
for buyer convenience the same as you would by accepting VISA payments.
All aBay requires is that you list PayPal as the default payment method. I
have always accepted other types of payment if the buyer wishes to pay that
way. People whose businesses have become so entrenched with selling on eBay
seem to feel a Constitutional right to expect to make a profit from it. If
you're buying and selling with such a narrow margion, maybe eBay isn't for
you. Stop whining.
