State To Auction Unclaimed Jewelry, Coins

BOSTON -- Just in time for Christmas shoppers
looking for bargains, the state is planning
to auction off thousands of dollars worth of
unclaimed property that's been abandoned in
safe deposit boxes across Massachusetts.
As required by state law, safe deposit boxes
that have not been maintained for seven years
are turned over to the Treasury's Abandoned
Property Division.
The treasury then attempts to locate the
owners or their heirs. If an owner is located,
the property is returned. If not, the personal
property is appraised and put up for public
auction. Any proceeds remain available for
rightful owners to claim.
Some of the items available for auction include
gold and silver, rare currency, such as paper
money and coins from around the world, and
jewelry such as rings, pendants, gemstones,
pocket watches and wristwatches.
The auction will be "live" on eBay from noon on
Dec. 4, 2008 until Dec. 15, 2008.
Similar auctions held in other states have
netted them thousands of dollars. In Illinois
last year, the state made $240,000 that it
reportedly used to help pay off its pension
fund debt.

Not too many negative feedbacks though. Some poor soul got some '65
clad back in the so called silver coin auction.
