Man charged in attempted coin shop robbery

SAN DIEGO - A second man suspected in the attempted armed
robbery of a North Park coin shop in February - during
which his accomplice was killed - has been charged in the
case, police said Wednesday.
Kendall Evans, 24, was arrested March 19 for a parole
violation, but he was not charged in the Feb. 13 incident
at the Old Coin Shop until detectives completed an
investigation and presented their case to the District
Attorney's Office, said San Diego police homicide Lt.
Kevin Rooney.
Evans has been charged with attempted murder, assault with
a deadly weapon, attempted robbery and conspiracy to
commit a crime, Rooney said.
Rooney said Evans and Anthony Watkins Jr., 26, tried to rob
the coin shop on El Cajon Boulevard near Texas Street.
Watkins was armed with a handgun when the men confronted
two employees, he said.
The employees, who were armed, exchanged gunfire with Evans
and Watkins, striking Watkins in the leg and lower back.
Watkins was helped outside by Evans, but collapsed on a
sidewalk. He died shortly afterward at a hospital.
Police said Evans was not hurt and ran before officers
arrived.
