Stolen treasure recovered by RCMP

A man with more than 60 convictions is accused of stealing $35,000 in
jewelry.

Matthew Claxton, Langley Advance
Published: Tuesday, December 16, 2008

A prolific offender with more than 60 criminal
convictions in two decades has been arrested in
Langley on charges of theft, fraud, and drug
possession.

Ernest Mainse, a 41-year-old Langley resident,
faces two counts of possession of stolen
property under $5,000, one count over $5,000,
a count of fraud, and one count of possession
of a controlled substance.

Police arrested Mainse after a crime spree
that began Dec. 9.

Sometime between noon and 4 p.m. that day,
someone broke into a home in the 6600 block of
Glover Road.

Taken were 30 antique watches, each valued at
about $1,000, two gold necklaces worth $2,000,
and about $3,000 in gold coins. A garage door
opener was also stolen, said RCMP Const.
Holly Marks.

On Dec. 11 just before noon, employees at
Langley Wal-Mart reported an attempted fraud:
a man tried to buy a $1,500 television set
with a stolen credit card, said Marks.

When police questioned the man, he admitted
the card did not belong to him. Two grams of
cocaine were located in his pocket when he
was searched.

Police then checked surveillance tapes and
discovered the suspect had arrived in a GM
van still in the Wal-Mart parking lot.

The van bore stolen licence plates and was
not insured. A search of the vehicle turned
up two briefcases with the antique watches
inside. A fireproof lockbox was also found
in the van.

Police are working out a way to open the
lockbox, which is thought to contain the
necklaces, coins, and some personal papers.
The key to the box had also been stolen,
said Marks.

Mainse has been arrested for the crimes,
and was held in custody while awaiting a
Tuesday morning appearance in Surrey
Provincial Court.

He is no stranger to the courthouse. Mainse
has a criminal record going back to 1989.
He has at least 60 convictions, his past
crimes including property and drug offenses,
frauds, obstruction of justice, break and
enter, and assault.

The bulk of his previous offenses appear to
have taken place in Surrey, said Marks.

"His longest jail term was 30 months,"
Marks said.

The list of charges against Mainse may grow,
as police in Langley are investigating a
possible link to similar incidents locally
in recent months.

Guess they don't have the '3 strikes and you are out' law north of the
border. Seems like with that many convictions, he should never have
had the opportunity to be walking the streets.

But one has to be resourceful in today's economy.
