Backpack comes full of treasures

UPDATED: 2009-01-14 01:27:54 MST

At first, Mustard Seed volunteers didn't think much of
the rucksack when it was dropped off at the social
agency by an anonymous donor.

But that changed once staff had a chance to sort
through it. Inside, they found a treasure trove,
including dozens of coins -- ranging from silver
dollars and 50-cent pieces to decades-old nickels,
dimes and pennies -- as well as strands of pearls,
pendants, rings and gold necklaces.

"Some of the stuff looks like it's quite extravagant,"
said Diana Schwenk, managing director of development.

Getting the bag full of goodies was a pleasant surprise.

"We have never received a donation like this before
so it's quite interesting," said Schwenk.

"Typically, a backpack may have a blanket or a
toothbrush or toothpaste or something like that for
people to use.

"We've found bus tickets and things like that, but
this is a first for us."

The next step will be to have the items appraised.

"Then we'll probably liquidate, or sell them, and
apply the money toward the operations of the Mustard
Seed," said Schwenk.
