Hello

I have never known anyone who would have
$335.00 in alcohol in there home. The
story below never tells how much they
had in rare coins.

Home, car burglarized

PANAMA CITY BEACH - A Beach couple returned from
vacation and found their home on burglarized and
thousands of dollars of items gone, including a
combat rifle and ammunition. Authorities were
called Tuesday when the couple returned and found
their Front Beach Road home in disarray, the rear
window destroyed, and about $7,000 of merchandise
missing, according to a Bay County Sheriff's
Office report.

A camcorder, rare coins, over $1,000 in jewelry,
and about $335 in alcoholic beverages were taken
along with the rifle and ammunition, the report
said. The family's red convertible was also broken
into, but no items were taken, the report said.

Good grief, I have only about $20 in alcohol in my home (for medicinal
purposes, please understand), but I have friends whose liquor supply is a
major line in their net worth. $335 is a pittance. My wife recently showed
me a mail-order catalog offering fancy cabinet units - empty - for $50k and
up.

With good scotch selling for $100 and up, it's not too hard to have $335
worth of booze, especially if you prefer top-shelf potables.

Hello

Seriously, non-of the people I knew never
kept that much at home.

When I grew up in Tennessee, we did not use
Vicks NyQuil when we could not sleep at night
from a cold. We used some Jack Daniel's. It
was also good as a paint thinner as well.

Some people would take antihistamine with
Jack Daniel's.

Spelling "antihistamine" right took me some time.

If I were a drinkin' man, I'd have to settle for generic rot-gut, I'm
afraid.

That's OK, just wait til the effects of the JD wear off, and no telling what
neat words you could spell!

Thirty years ago I visited a friend who lived in the Denver area, and he
took me to a package store called Applejack that had bottles of wine selling
for up to $100, all mixed together and displayed in sort of a random manner
in big open bins. I walked plenty far away from the edges of those bins,
lest I accidentally brushed one of those C-notes onto the floor. I wonder
what the same bottles of wine are selling for today. BTW, this same friend
now lives near me, and he is one of the folks about whose cabinet I spoke
earlier.

A quality case (24 bottles) of European beer can cost $35 or so; a
case of Sierra Nevada Pale (domestic) ale damn near $30. If your
tastes run other than watery American lagers (which I still drink from
time to time) it's not a big deal to have $150 worth of beer on hand.
Sounds like the Florida case represents a couple who had stocked up a
bit against the coming anarchy (which may have already come to South
Florida).

And many vintage wines can over $335, just like vintage coins. Theft of a
couple hundred thousand dollar coin collection could involve only one or two
coins, just like rare wines, paintings, jewelry, etc. If some people will
pay more than $335 for a beer stein, the same amount worth of alcohol ain't
much.

Yes, quality beer steins are good things to own and they can set you
back. I spent $225 on one once (Anheuser's Bevo Fox). But most of
mine were only about 1/4th of that.

No I have not - but I may have some elongated cents with fancy Jim
Beam bottles depicted on them. Somebody did maybe forty different
elongateds on that theme about forty years ago.

Thinking about it, my dad has a few - like the 50th Anniversary of the
American Legion. His bottles are still sealed and loaded, so they
retain some value.

If you are trying to maintain a liquor cabinet (which I don't), and you like
good stuff, then $335 isn't that much really. A few bottles of good bourbon
and I would be most of the way there.

I was in Germany last year and saw some cool looking ones in a souvenier
shop. I declined to purchase because I figured they were probably cheap and
if you want a real one don't go to a t-shirt shop on the corner.

A friend from Reidsville, NC gave me a full Jim Beam Reidsville Centennial
decanter back in 1973. For some reason only an incurable collector could
appreciate, I still have it, sealed and full. A Beam bottle collection of
one. Unfortunately, 35 years later it appears to be worth only about
whatever the bourbon inside is worth. The original price was right, though.
Too bad I'm not a booze fan and don't have many friends who are any more
either. Times have sure changed in that regard.

When I began collecting beer cans about 1975 I used to buy cases of as many
different beer brands as I could find, drink them and store the empty cans
in the attic to cure and appreciate. At any time I might have had at least
$335 worth of beer (in today's money) waiting to be consumed. When I wanted
to add insulation in the attic a few years ago, I discarded over 200 cases
of those empty beer cans that never became the source of college funds I had
hoped for and were never worth diddly. If only they had provided good
insulation, I might have been able to save a thousand bucks.

Yep. Tequilla and vodka originated as lowly regarded peasant
potables. Nowadays a bottle of pure agave tequilla will set you back
$50 for the common stock and close to $100 for the high-end stuff.
Ditto for vodka lines. And if you're a wine afficionado, it's nothing
to drop $350 for two six-packs of medium-grade grape juice, never mind
the high-end estate lineages where three or four benjamins gets you
one dusty bottle.

You need to stop thinking in cans of beer and start thinking in malt
whiskies and fine brandies. :-) Billy

As other posters have noted, it is easy to hit that price with a good
scotch. Two or three bottles of Johnny Walker Blue Label will do it. A
local liquor store has two or three bottles of rare liquor under lock
and key that sell for over $1K (they have had them for a long time!).

In article <49751ef5$0$20288$607e...@cv.net>, =?ISO-8859-1?Q?=22Ro=DFert_G=2E_Schaffrath=22?=
we saw a bottle of real naploeon brandy hit $65,000 at an auction. not close
to the record, of course.
