I see that groove too which makes me suspicious. I don't believe it to
be a magician's coin because I don't see how it could be used in a
trick. I believe the trick is to make a collector believe it is a
rotated die.

It is a magicians coin. Someone brought one into my shop years ago
and the guy insisted on figuring out what
it was, so we ruined it with 2 vise-grips.

If it is indeed an expanded shell, then yes, it's a magician coin. If
however it is 2 half dollars, 'glued' together, one milled out on one
side and the other cut down to fit inside the milled side, I would say
that it was made to simulate a rotated die. The eBay description
didn't say if it was one piece or two.
