In my case, being unemployed since Thursday, September 18, 2008.

I still job hunting. Notice on the link shown below that Michigan
unemployment rate as of the end of December was 10.6 percent.
By now (01/31/09), it might be 11.0 percent.

I remember the recession of 1982, standing in those unemployment lines
was not a pleasant experience that is for sure.
After 4 months (which seemed much longer) I finally found a new job,
as I walked out of the unemployment office after
picking up my final check I said to myself I never want to see this
place again, so far so good but who knows what the future will hold.

The current recession in some ways is much worse than in 1982, back
then you knew the jobs (at least auto related)
were going to come back when the recession was over but these days
many of them are gone for good.

I went to a coins show a couple of weeks ago and didn't buy anything. I
had money but didn't find anything I wanted.

That was a bad time. The unemployment rate reached 10.8% in November 1982
(the highest level since the end of the Great Depression in 1940) and stayed
above 10% for almost a year. I wonder if that's why the mint didn't make
any mint sets in 1982 and 1983.

I wasn't caught up in that recession but I was caught up in the Nixon/Ford
recession when the unemployment rate went up to 9% in 1975 or so. It was
not very much fun. I can sympathize with people who are caught up in this
now.

But I'm wondering how the current problems will effect the production of
mint and proof sets and commemoratives this year.
