I'd like to buy a common date 8 Reales coin and I see that there are plenty
of them on eBay.
Many of them look extremely nice, UNC, just like if they came out of the
mint just yesterday!
I'm not a great connoisseur of old Mexican coins but it seems highly unlike
to me to have so many UNC coins with tones of luster today after 200+ years!
Do I have a point to be suspicious or I am just paranoid?;-)

They probably come with a "free" bottle of soy sauce and a set of
chopsticks :-)

These coins frequently come nice - not always, but the coins minted in
the 1880s and 1890s tend to come nice.

The History of Mexico dovetails very nicely with the History of
Silver. Mexico had mountains and mountains (real mountains, not a
figure of speech) that were chock full of silver. Under the Spanish,
the silver was required to be minted into coins. Under the Republic,
I'm not certain that minting was required, but that's primarily what
they did. Many of these coins made their way to the Phillipines
(where they were exchanged for luxury goods that the Mexicans and
Europeans wanted) and ultimately may coins made their way to China.

Many coins were "saved" as a form of bullion, there was no need for
that many coins for circulation. Much the same situation as the
Morgan Dollar coins in the U.S.A.

Yes, I suppose there are fake 8 reales. But if the coins weigh
correctly and their diameter is correct, I would not be overly
afraid. And don't pay too much for the later dates in AU or BU!!!

I used to have a Roman denarius with clear mint lustre, if that helps

Very interesting, thanks for the insight!
I don't care if the coin I want to buy is a "common date" as the 1880s and
1890s you are mentioning, I just want to be a nice looking BU;-)

Sure but you can do that only after you receive the coin and for me it would
cost me quite a lot to senf it back to the seller, let alone that some
sellers would not refund you or will take months to do that...

> And don't pay too much for the later dates in AU or BU!!!

What would you consider a "fair" price for an AU and/or BU such coin?
Thanks a lot!

Let's cut to the chase here. You should not spend any money on coins
whatsoever, now or ever. For every problem you pose, there are simple
solutions, but apparently not for you. Also, if losing thirty to
fifty dollars would cripple you, financially or emotionally, that is
another reason not to venture into this field. You should stay away
from coins. If you have any now, try to resell them and see what a
huge loss that you will have to take to get back to cash.

Obtaining a very nice late date Mexican Caps & Rays 8 reales in AU/BU
for thirty or forty dollars is one of the simplest things to do, I
can't imagine the validity of all your nervous objections.

Where did I say something like that?!
I know nothing about prices of Mexican 8 Reales, so I asked what is
considered to be a "fair" price for a coin like that in AU/UNC!!!

>You should stay away

A little late for that, as I am collecting since 12 years and I have a
collection worth around 100.000 euros.
But thanks for your advise, I'll consider it!

>If you have any now, try to resell them and see what a

I collect for my pleasure, I never sell my coins!

1) I just asked what is the price these coins are usually sold on eBay!
You could say 150-200 $ or 1000-1500$, I would believe you the same!
I know nothing about prices and that;s why I asked this simple question!
Where is my "crime"?!
Couldn't you simply answer it without being offensive?!
2) "my nervous objections"???!!!
Read again my postings and show me where have you seen my/any..."nervous
objections"???!!!
OTOH, *your* posting is aggressive (without a reason!...), offending and
certainly it qualifies as a..."nervous objection"!

If you have emotional problems and you can't answer straight questions
keeping it polite, please refrain in the future from answering my postings!
Thank you.

One hundred thousand Euros? And you don't know what to pay for a
common silver coin with 7/8ths of a troy ounce of silver???

I call "Bullshit".

Also, a person who has bought coins for twelve years and who has never
tried to sell one is in for a very rude awakening. You are the doofus
that every shyster coin dealer is looking for.

"I have never sold a coin" is a statement of ignorance, not pride.

This is a good question, but this isn't a good place to ask it. As
you've seen, you're going to get flamed. This is an unmoderated forum,
and it has degenerated over the past few years so the point whereas the
flamers are largely dominant, those who for their own private reasons
enjoy putting others down with insults, name calling, and other
nastiness. There are still some normal people here, so maybe someone who
knows these coins will answer you question in good faith.

I collect the earlier Latin American crown-size silver coins, minted
while Mexico and other countries south of the border were still colonies
of Spain and Portugal (mostly), the Pieces of Eight. These are rarely
found in the condition you're looking for, AU and BU, particularly the
earlier ones, but the history is really fascinating.

For these Mexican pieces you're asking about, if you don't get any good
information here, you can try one of the groups at Yahoo Groups. Maybe
someone here can suggest a particular group, or you can do a search for
one here:

You are right Reid but it's a shame this group has sank so much!
It was a friendly place a few years ago with nice people but it seems that
the rude ones have forced the good guys away...
What a shame!

Oh, I know I can't find a piece of 8 in unc or au, I was asking mainly for
the late 18th century cap and rays.
I found in eBay prices going from $35 to $500 or more so I wanted to know
what is the "fair" price.
I don't understaand why my question provoked such a reaction!
Maybe personal problems, who knows...
Thanks anyway Reid!

Anything crown-sized, common-date in Mexican after 1733 can readily be

start with. Otherwise, BU is not hard to find. While some sellers
will indeed ask outrageous prices, acquiring such pieces is more a
question of having the money than anything else.

This is a last answer to you.
I'm nothing "dubious", I'm posting here since many years (maybe 10) and I've
never offended anyone as you like to do.
I'm poster "gogu" and I use cnntp since I'm abroad from the beginning of
September and I can't use my ISP for posting on Usenet.
You OTOH are rude, uneducated and with serious psychological problems.
Seek asap professional help and get some education.

I'm sorry now that I've defended you a few times in the past, you are

I gave you a straight, honest answer to your first question, and then
you don't believe it. That's what sends me off.

You want somebody to hold your hand all through a $35 transaction (and
you say you have 100,000 Euros worth of coins - who helped you
purchase them?).

You act like you would piss your pants if you lost such a small sum.

All Unbelieveable.

Mexican Caps & Rays, as a type coin, are very readily obtainable in
BU. Plain and simple.

P.S. Gogu, if anyone on RCC has ever demonstrated a lot of mental
instability, you are high on the list.

But perhaps they don't have good psych meds in your third-world
country.
