Gold Medal Sold at Auction for EUR 141,000 in Berlin

OSNABRüCK, Germany, February 10 /PRNewswire/ -- At an
auction of historic coins and medals held on 5 February,
2009 at the Künker auction house in Berlin, a rare Polish
gold medal, with an original value of 50 ducats when
struck in 1658, has sold for EUR 141,000. The Polish
king, Kasimir, is depicted on the obverse of the gold
medal, while the reverse shows the liberation of the
Polish city of Torun on the River Vistula from Swedish
occupying forces.
Market for Historic Coins and Medals Still Strong
The total price of lots sold at the auction was over
EUR 4.6 million, exceeding estimates of EUR 2.9 million
by more than 50%. Numerous potential buyers wrangled
over the especially rare medal, including over 250
bidders present at the auction and a considerable number
of contenders who placed written and telephone bids.
Russian Coins and Medals Particularly Coveted
Russian coins and medals from the Tsarist era were in
great demand. Künker sold off 521 such individual lots
for a total price of over EUR 2.3 million, exceeding
estimates by almost 100%. One highlight was the rare,
mint-condition, 3-ruble coin (20 Zloty), minted under
Tsar Nicholas I in 1839 in Warsaw for circulation in
Poland, which soared in price from an estimated
sale-price of EUR 6,000 to an incredible EUR 59,000.
Künker Auction House was founded in 1971 and specializes
in historic coins and medals. Künker hosts four annual
international auctions in Germany, of which one is held
in Berlin on the evening before the World Money Fair
international coin show, with the other three taking
place in Osnabrück (northern Germany).
