Not a true Pillar Dollar, although a "descendant" of the same. This
is a "Bust" 8 reales and a relatively poor example at that. However,
the present auction price is about where it should be.

The coin in the Red Book is a true "Pillar" and not a later "Bust"
coin.

I might be off a year or so on each end, but true "Pillar" Dollars
were machine struck from 1732 to 1771 and their fineness and silver
content was slightly better than the "Bust" 8 reales struck from 1772
to 1821 or so. In terms of scarcity, the Charles III coins are much
better pieces than the Charles IV and Ferdinand VII coins.
