Went into the Springpatch Circle K this A.M. (Friday 13th May 2011)

Prominently displayed near the from door was a shelf full of the ever
desirable "Little Debbie's" snack cakes and related edibles. The
display included the extremely highly desirable "Little Debbie's
Oatmeal Creme Pies" (LDOCP), a staple item in convenience and grocery
stores everywhere.

For the uninitiated, LDOCP are essentially two large soft oatmeal
cookies with a very gooey white marshmellow-y filling in-between the
cookies. LDOCP are equally good with coffee, Diet soda or Lager Beer,
depending upon the exact time of day you have a craving.

A large Circle K sign stated "SALE!!! Only 59 cents!!!"

Which was startling to me, as LDOCP have featured a pre-printed
"maufacturers suggested retail price" (MSRP) of 50 cents on their
wrapper for approximately the last two years. Before that, the MSRP
was only 25 cents for many years.

Upon close inspection, the pre-printed MSRP is now 75 cents!!! The
Bastards!!!

Even Circle K (the home of convenience at high prices) knows they have
to introduce the new higher price with an introductory sweetner!!!

In about 24 months or so, the LDOCP MSRP has tripled. It seems to me
this represents a 2/3rds loss in the purchasing power of my long-term
dollar denominated savings.

Actually, the fine folks at Circle K have gone through the entire
store and conducted what seems to be another 10%-15% across-the-board
price increase. This is about the third general price increase of
this magnitude at Circle K since last fall/winter (late 2010).

We are SO TOAST!!! TOAST TOAST TOAST.

Long before there is ever an American hyperinflation, "they" are going
to confiscate 90% of your dollar purchasing power without much of a
murmur from the plebes.

oly

P.S. If you eat LDOCP while drinking beer, it is always good to have
some salty potato chips on hand as well. The salt helps to cut the
sweetness of the other two when combined, a sweetness which can be
intense.

I won't berate your silly inane quibbles. Only an idiot would eat
Little Debbie's "Oatmeal" Creme Pies in a butt-headed attempt to lower
their cholesterol. It's nice to see you can quickly "google" a bunch
of information on a company you know nothing about.

But, philosophically, there's a downside of trying to live forever.
Both what you forgo today in pleasure, plus all the years you'll be
tied to a wheelchair. I have friends in their 90s who are wonderful
people, but they are sad, lonely and most have outlived their
savings. It's not pretty to be ninety+.

One supposes that you won't have to worry about living that long,
Reed. I would guess that someday, somewhere, somebody will pound the
ever-living crap out of you and there simply won't be anything else
left inside. It won't be me, but I'll be amused when it happens.

You're actually quite lucky that very few coin shows still require
attendees to wear a name badge.

A number of years ago Texas coin dealer and prolific RCC poster Larry
Calder promised to seek out Reid at the Atlanta ANA Show and
administer such a pounding.

Unfortunately Larry suffered a stroke on his way to the show, lapsed
into a coma and eventually passed away. It was a real shame as many
RCC'ers were looking forward to Larry's show report....about the
pounding.

Wow, Larry must have been a fine Texas gentleman, a real loss to his
family, the hobby and the world. Reed would probably say (with much
glee) the stroke came from too much junk food.

I think I've posted this here before, but maybe not:

"No sane man can afford to dispense with debilitating pleasures; no
ascetic can be considered reliably sane. Hitler was the archetype of
the abstemious man. When the other krauts saw him drink water in the
Beer Hall they should have known he was not to be trusted."

Sweet snacks with beer? Ugh. Milk or Silk or diet soda, yes. Beer, blech!
Is there any occasion when you won't hoist a beer or six?

BTW, the core inflation report today was 0.2%. OTOH, the major DC gasoline
wholesaler hoisted its price 25 cents overnight this week just on the excuse
that killing Osama and unrest in a few Arab nations warrants it. Unlike DC,
though, I doubt that your District Attorney is going to look into price
gouging at Circle K (which does happen to be illegal for gasoline).

All of the oil dealers here in Springfield "hold hands" on gasoline &
diesel prices. One or two guys are the recognized price leaders in
this market, and when they move, so does everybody else.

Actually, I only drink some beer on Saturday night, maybe Friday too
(1) if it's been a rough week in bank examining, or (2) if there's a
Monday holiday and there's extra recovery time.

If we are near one of two micro-breweries in Quincy or Champaign, my
colleagues and I might go mid-week on "Cheap Pint" night.

Anymore, the drinking time is directly related to recovery time
available. There's a big difference between what you gotta have at
age 52 versus age 30 or 35. However, getting the munchies is still
predictable.

As I am driving down to STL tonight and Peoria tomorrow, no beer
tonight!!! Off I go!!!

Fair enough. But still, LDs with beer? Must be a Springfield special dish.

A few days after Easter this year, the Super Walmart in Quincy,
Illinois had about 12 shopping carts with leftover "Peeps" on sale for
the low low price of 27 cents for a large package. Yellow or Purple,
your choice, I think 16 or 20 per package. 12 relatively full carts.
Some manager either really overestimated demand, or the economy is
really really bad, even worse than I think (and you know I don't have
an optimistic outlook).

You could always make Peeps sandwiches, if you like Peeps. Substitute
Graham Crackers for bread sounds good.
