Sorry, not great pic, I'll try to take better pics in the sun tomorrow.
They are all 1 ounce gold coins, 2 from the US, 2 from Australia, 1 from
China (?).
Trying to figure the best way to sell them and the price I can expect. Some
general research on the inernet got results that didn't give as good news as
I hoped.
Say the spot price of gold is $930. That's for an unformed "blob" of gold.
I would think a gold coin would be worth more. How much, no idea, but I
would think more. Now I understand about dealers needing to make a profit,
but how much? I called a few places and they were offering me like $780 or
so. That much of discount to sell to a dealer?
I also saw people trying to get in the $1200-1300 range. I understand
they're just trying to snag someone, and I don't expect that. But I was
hoping to get in the $930 range, figuring that since it's a coin rather than
a blob, and that would hopefully make up the difference for the "dealer
premium" when selling to them.
I know the pictures aren't much to go on, but are any of those that I have
have any collector value beside the gold content? I.e., are they rare?
They're all late 1980's and newer, so I wouldn't think so.
What is the best place/method to sell to get a decent fair price? I'm not
looking to rip someone off, but I'd like to get a fair price on my side too.
I realize I won't get top dollar.
Any help or advice would be much appreciated. I'm not a regular coin
dealer, so while I'll try, I might not see a reply post. If you could
respond by direct email, it would be much appreciated. Thanks,

They are by no means rare. They are bullion products and are not meant
to be collector coins
although a lot of people collect them. They just don't have the
numismatic value of say a classic
double eagle from 1925.

The best place to go if you are looking to "dump" what you have is
https://online.kitco.com/selling/index.html
they buy all sorts of bullion items.
the other option is to sell them on e-bay yourself.

If you live near a large enough city, try putting them on Craig's List
for cash at the spot price. You may very well sell them at that
without the e-Bay or Kitco hassle. Some buyers prefer a direct sale
at a bargain over e-Bay or dealer pricing. Just be prepared to meet
in a public location and don't get fidgety if the buyer does some
close inspection and measurements to make sure they're real.
If you could say what region of the country, or what major city you
are near, the group could probably indicate who is a reputable dealer
(i.e., one who pays O.K. and has a good check) in your vicinity. You
don't have to give us your exact city.

So Oly, old top, would you recommend he sell to Frank Provasek despite
Frank's multiple suspensions from eBay?
Actually, Frank might be a good choice - if Frank was under the
impression that the RCC group would be looking over his shoulder, he
might be inclined to give the OP a better than average deal.
Of course, the OP might prefer a dealer where he could walk the coins
in. The mails are risky.

I sure would .. Franks money is as good as any ..., except I wouldn't
take yours though.
You shouldn't have to ask why being that you believe yourself to be
the only person that isn't an idiot.

I am done feeding these guys. I have no idea why anyone bothers with their
hatred and character assasination.

Hi all,
Thanks much for the replies and for the suggestions. I live in the Chicago
area. I got a chance to take some outside pictures. Much better and
clearer:

The 2 USA coins are 1999 and 2002, the 2 Chinese ones are 1987 and 2000 and
the Ausie' one is 1987.
So any fair dealers in the Chicago area or north suburbs? I certainly would
prefer to just bring them in rather than mail them.
Thanks,
Joe (joemagiera at ameritech dot net)
Chicagoland has an abundance of coin dealers. You should not have a
problem finding a decent dealer who will take care of you on the buy
side.
I collect world coins and my experience with Chicago dealers is more
in that area. However, IMHO, Mr. Harlan J. Berk, at 31 North Clark
Street in downtown Chicago is the Prince of all Midwestern coin
dealers. It is worth a trip downtown just to see his shop (go on
weekdays only).
I have also had several satisfactory experiences with the gentleman at
Distinctive Coins in Downers Grove.
In downstate Illinois, Springfield Rare Coin Galleries and Steve
Mileham (both in Springfield) are good buyers.
We have several important Chicago numismatists who sometimes respond
on RCC. Perhaps they have their favorites and will make a suggestion
here???
At any rate, there are lots of acceptable dealers (competitive prices
and good checks) in your area.

I haven't done business with the other dealers, but I can second the
recommendation of Harlan Berk.
take care,
Scott
I'll third it. See if you can get together with Tom Delorey, who used to
post here, and still works there. Especially if you appreciate a very wry
sense of humor. 8>)

Tom is a top-notch numismatist - the U.S. guidebook that he co-
authored for Coin World is much under-appreciated. It is loaded with
extra-detailed information.
