1855 Kellogg & Co pioneer $20 Gold piece, VF30 or better detail with
some mint luster, the initals "EZ" lightly engraved on the obverse.
Similar to the US issues, with the company name instead of "Liberty"
on the coronet, and SAN FRANCISCO CALIFORNIA on the reverse. 1.075
troy ounces of .900 fine gold, same as US issues. This coin was
offered this summer but did not sell. We are relisting this coin at
the same starting price even though gold has gone up $75 per oz since
it was first listed!

GUARANTEED to slab "Genuine" with PCGS or NGC!

I'd say it has Fine details at best.
Heavily damaged by grafitti (as noted).
Probably worth about 20% over bullion value.

These seem to be very liberally graded by PCGS and NGC.

This PCGS XF45 sold for $8000 in July

No kidding, if I took that coin raw to any dealer at a show and claimed it
was XF45, I'd be laughed out of the room. How does it happen that a grading
company can get away with such nonsense?

If you're the seller, it has "initials lightly engraved". If you're the
potential buyer, it's "heavily damaged by grafitti". No wonder more
collectors are going with slabbed coins, particularly with the older stuff.

Oy gevalt - is that one fugly beat up coin or what?
Not even close to being XF, not even VF.
Gradeflation at its worst.
$8000 for that? I'd like to sell the buyer a bridge I have connecting Brooklyn
and downtown Manhattan!
Makes Frank Provasek's coin look good in comparison (except for the unfortunate
initials carved in the obverse).

The major TPG services wouldn't grade the coin in question.
They may authenticate it now (as opposed to sending it back in a body bag).

Probably because it's their ball and bat. And because people like you and
me continue to pay for their services. Personally, as much as I'd like to
have several of my coins in a PCGS slab, I refuse to pay for the privilege
and will instead be satisfied with coins already slabbed, as long as I agree
with the label, the price, and the coin's appearance.
