NEAR GEM. Most overused phrase on ebay. Near gem is ms64. That coin is
Gem+(ebay speak) at MS66.NOT.
It's questionable how much additional "meaning" the numerical grades provide
over the former popular adjectives. Especially when the same coin can often
receive a different numerical grade from the same TPG, perhaps depending on
its rarity or market value. And are you saying there's a "legal proof" of a
coin's grade if it's presented as a numerical figure? As graded and slabbed
by all TPGs, or just some of them?
Of course adjectival grades have meaning. VG means the same today as it did
before the numerical Sheldon grading scale became popular among all US coin
series. Collectors knew what to expect in a sight-unseen VG coin, or even a
VG+ coin. Same as they did with a Choice or Gem BU. I would be no more
confident today about a sight-unseen MS63 Morgan than I would have been with
a Choice BU example, each offered by a dealer I'd never dealt with before.
Since the ANA doesn't grade coins itself, and the major TPG's don't seem to
use ANA standards as the basis for their grading opinions, the ANA grading
standards are essentially meaningless in today's slab-oriented market. ANA
grading standards seem to have been reduced to an unofficial guide for the
collector of raw coins.
The UK coins he lists seem to me to be severely overgraded. Billy

You are correct. Centsles is definitely a self slabber. I think he's one of
those behind a lawsuit againt ebay for restricting the slab naming and
numbering system to the fab 4.
With a bit of luck all involved in the law suit against ebay will end up
bankrupt. Billy
Why do you want ebay to win so bad? Do you have a state in it?
Actually,I think Ebay was right to exclude those self slabbers. They went a
little far,but they can still sell their coins. That doesn't mean they
didn't break some anti-trust law. Last I heard one or two of the plaintiffs
have dropped out.
The one that bugs me is the no paper payments rule. I thnk there is a
lawsuit developing on that one too.
Do you actually read what you comment on? Where do you get the idea that
Billy wants eBay to win? And a "state"??

I still have mixed emotions on this one. Glad to see the reduction of
over-hyped lower tier slabs, although they can still be listed with the
proper wording. On the other hand, I feel there should be guidelines
through which other TPG's can gain or apply for " full approval" by eBay. I
think there could indeed be grounds for some sort of lawsuit against eBay,
but I doubt the folks involved this time will be the ones to succeed.

It seems that there are so many ways to circumvent the latest PayPal only
rule that I don't see how eBay could ever enforce it. But then eBay did
make the rule, so they must feel they have a way to police it. Stupid.
We'll just have to wait and see on this one.
I want self slabbers to be unable to peddle their wares on ebay as they take
advantage of the less knowledgeable collector who thinks that an MS65 is the
same grade for every coin regardless of who performed the slabbing.
It seems to me that some self slabbers often slab pocket change as high MS.

I just have to own a full set of SGS graded MS70 Jeffersons.
