========================
Last year, the Grand Rapids, Mich., resident decided to use those
pennies to make some real change.

"Art was the only way I could tell a mass of people my story," Martich
said in a statement through Ripley's Believe It or Not, which acquired
her huge coin. "I wanted to share the message that anyone can do this,
you just have to start somewhere. What matters isn't how much you
make, but how much you save."

Martich -- a self-taught artist -- glued each penny onto a wooden
frame that's nearly 10 feet tall and sorted through thousands of coins
to choose ones that were blemish-free.

Eventually, she turned to a bank to get coins straight from the U.S.
Mint.

"I needed very shiny pennies to create the highlights," she said. "I
wanted to use the different natural shades of pennies to create the
image."

Interesting.
Wonder if they will have to put some type of protection on the cents to keep
them all from toning?

In a similar vein, I was once in a tavern in NYC that had the bar covered in
pennies covered over with a think coat of clear polyurethane.

A New York bar? If it had been in business for awhile I wouldn't assume
that was polyurethane.

I have heard of an artist using elongated cents to recreate the
"scales" on the sides of a large bronze-colored fish sculpture. But
the artist put the elongateds' "smooth side" up, so the EC designs
didn't happen to show.

A few years ago, here in San Antonio, there was a car covered in
polyurethane covered small change.
