$68K in coins and jewelry reported stolen from home

VERO BEACH - More than $68,000 in collectible coins and jewelry
were stolen from a family's home sometime Thursday, police said.
A family member returned home at 2:15 p.m. Thursday and found
the home in the 2600 block of 19th Street had been burglarized,
according to a police report. A fire safe containing many of
the coins under the couple's bed had been opened, the report
said. The couple said the safe contained 14 rare silver coins
from a shipwrecked Spanish boat.
In 1622, the Nuestra Senora de Atocha, a cargo ship from
Spain, sunk off the coast of the Florida Keys. A hurricane
tossed the ship in the coral reef, records show. The couple
had obtained coins from the shipwreck, according to the
report
Other mementos from the sunken ship stolen from the home
include a 10-karat emerald stone inside a gold bezel hanging
from a gold chain and a silver coin with an inset emerald
attached to a gold chain, the report said.
A Playstation 3 and a video game were also reported missing
from the home, the report said.
Investigators could not determine exactly where the burglar
entered the home.

It says "fire safe", not "floor safe". A fire safe can a fireproof
box that is not built into the floor. Could have been just shoved
under the bed.

Doesn't sound like a very safe safe.
They'd need a plasma cutter to get mine out.
Of course, a gun to my head asking nicely for the key would work also ..
But they'd have to kill my two German Shepards first, during which time I
would already be drawing a bead on them.
But if I was out and they killed my dogs then sat and silently waited for
me, then I'd be screwed, unless UnderDog showed up.

VERO BEACH - Police have made an arrest related to the theft
of thousands of dollars in rare coins last week.
Robert Jason Robb, 18, of the 600 block of 26th Avenue, Vero
Beach, was charged with dealing in stolen property Friday.
Police interviewed Robb after he had been booked into the
Indian River County Jail by the Sheriff's Office on drug
charges.
On Wednesday, a Vero Beach couple told police more than
$68,000 in collectible coins and jewelry were stolen from
their home sometime Thursday. A local coin dealer told
police Robb walked into his store Thursday and sold a set
of rare coins to him, according to the arrest affidavit.
The burglary happened at a home in the 2600 block of 19th
Street, according to a police report. A fire safe under the
couple's bed had been opened, the report said. The couple
said the safe contained several rare silver coins from a
Spanish cargo ship, the Nuestra Senora de Atocha, which
sunk off the Florida Keys in 1622. Other valuables from the
sunken ship that were stolen include a 10-karat emerald
stone inside a gold bezel hanging from a gold chain and a
silver coin with an inset emerald attached to a gold chain,
the report said.
A family member said Robb had visited their home late last
month, according to his arrest affidavit. The coin dealer
said he photocopied Robb's driver's license when he bought
the coins from him for $1,700.
Earlier Friday, someone in the 900 block of 18th Place
called 911 when he saw Robb loitering in the neighborhood.
A sheriff's deputy confronted Robb and found marijuana and
ecstasy on him, the affidavit said.
In an interview with police, Robb said two friends asked
him to sell the coins because he had a driver's license and
they did not. Robb told police the friends paid him $50 for
running the errand. He said he used the money to buy drugs
and a tattoo.
Robb was being held in lieu of $8,500 bail Monday.
