In looking over eBay auction prices for modern silver Roosies, it's
interesting to note that PCGS graded MS70 Ultra Cameo/Deep
Cameo/Whatever sell for about 4 times those graded the same by NGC.
Now I haven't seen a dime's worth of difference between PCGS & NGC
graded coins of this series, esp. the modern issues.
Could PCGS be getting the big bucks because of their "Registry Set"
feature?
If so, one has to wonder why NGC doesn't do the same thing.

But PCGS doesn't profit more because of a 70 grading. The person who
submitted the coin gets those profits. Having a registry set might increase
submissions in an indirect way thus bringing in more grading fees. I think
it comes down to reputation and I would wager the population reports reflect
the PCGS 70 to be more scarce.

I looked at a lot of 2006 ASE Reverse Proofs last year. NGC had some very
nice ones rated PR69. I found most PCGS 69s to be inferior to NGC 69s in my
limited sample. Yet PCGS commands more money. Fine with me. I now own
three extremely high end 69s in NGC and paid a lot less money than I would
have for PCGS coins.

I never said PCGS profited more, I wondered if the fact that PCGS runs
the registry and NGC doesn't not accounts for the higher demand (hence
higher price) of PCGS graded coins.

PCGS requires their 70s to be slightly "more perfect" than NGC, thus a
smaller
number of PCGS 70 coins. This brings higher prices for PCGS coins
from people
who believe only PCGS coins should be bought. David Hall uses such
scare tactics
as BUYING NON-PCGS GRADED COINS IS SLOW DEATH

A collector who wants modern Proofs in plastic would probably be happy
with the
quality of Proof 69 or Proof 70 products from any of the major 4
services (PCGS, NGC,
ANACS, or ICG)

What makes you think NGC doesn't have registry sets?

I do not agree completely with saying stick to the major 4.
Have purchased some SGS at a lower price and resubmitted some of their
higher graded coins
they came back from the major 2 at the same or a couple of times one grade
lower.
Some were broken out because of the SGS name and still sold
for grade price they had named.
Still made the coins a very good buy.
Not to long ago ICG wasn't looked upon with great regards.

Thanks for pointing this out.
NGC is certainly keeping it a secret.
Unlike PCGS, they don't seem to be advertising this feature.

I think an SGS employee just dumps a bag of coins into a hopper and
turns on a machine that places the coins into pre-labeled MS-70 or
Proof70 holders. :)

I did buy a 1966 SMS-70 SGS 5-coin set recently that had surprisingly
nice coins. Far from perfect, but worth the $11.61 I paid for the set.

Last year I bought a set of 3 PDS dimes from them. (I say "them"
because the e-Bay distributor of SGS slabs is part of the same
corporate entity as SGS.) These "MS-70" specimens had been dipped and
possibly whizzed to a uniform blast white. They all had numerous bag
marks and other imperfections. One of them developed a dark splotch
not long after they arrived. They were cheap enough, but any
reputable grader would have body-bagged them. MS-70? As if!

An honest e-Bay listing would have described them as "Reasonably good
circulated dime specimens that have been thoroughly dipped and whizzed
to a nice uniform white color. Could easily pass for BU if you don't
look too closely at them. Encased in a cheap plastic holder to slow
down the inevitable discoloration that occurs after you've removed all
natural surface oxidization by stripping a coin down to a uniform,
bare blast white. May take 2-3 weeks to arrive since we don't
actually have any more of them in stock right now but we routinely
advertise and sell these, and our cleaning and dipping shop says they
have another batch of raw dimes on back order from our wholesaler.
Money back guarantee but don't bother complaining about our business
practices because we get dozens of irate customer e-mails every day
and just ignore them."

It is not my fault that you weretoo stupid to understand. Your
reasoning is fundamentally flawed since NGC also has regstry sets.
Furthermore others have pointed out that it is a matter of population
counts. The latter part is exactly what I said in the part you cut out
since you were too stupid to understand.
