Three teens are seeking $6 million in gold coins
from Shasta County, alleging they were roughed
up by sheriff's deputies one night this spring
at a Palo Cedro home.

In a federal civil suit filed in the U.S.
Eastern District Court in Sacramento,
Lillian Simonis, Hannah Moore and Laura
Lovett allege that about 11:30 p.m.
April 22, deputies entered a home on Silver
Bridge Road where several teens were sleeping.
"In one of the bedrooms, three 17-old-girls
were awakened by the commotion and, thinking
they were being robbed, attacked one intruder
in the dark," the teens allege in a "citizen's
complaint" filed with the suit. "The girls
were dragged off by the intruder and into the
light of the living room where all of them
were handcuffed."
Two young men in the house were handcuffed
and sitting on the couch, the suit said.
Shasta County sheriff's employees Larry Fitch,
Pamela Depuy, Terrisa Clemens and Eric Magrini
then "brutalized" the teens with "torture,
threats and insults," the suit alleges.
Simonis, who was suffering from a head injury
from a skateboarding accident several weeks
earlier, had her head repeatedly banged into
the floor during the encounter, the suit
contends.
After being deemed healthy enough for
confinement by doctors at Shasta Regional
Medical Center, Simonis and Lovett were sent
to the county's juvenile hall. Simonis was
released, and Lovett was held for two days,
the suit contends.
Moore was allowed to go home.
Moore and Simonis have since turned 18. Lovett
turns 18 later this month, according to
documents included with the suit.
The teens were never charged, and the county
would release only minimal details about the
incident to them after they asked for copies
of documents related to the arrest, including
copies of search warrants and booking sheets,
the suit alleges.
In a letter to the teens included with the
suit, assistant county counsel John Loomis
wrote that Lovett was arrested on suspicion
of two counts of battery on a peace officer
and a count of resisting or obstructing a
peace officer. Simonis was arrested on
suspicion of resisting or obstructing an
officer.
Loomis wrote that the deputies responded to
the home after receiving a report that
Simonis had assaulted someone.
"In the course of the investigation, Lovett
became argumentative and subsequently
kicked two deputy sheriffs," Loomis wrote.
"Simonis interfered with the
investigation ... by attempting to walk
away when told to sit and by grabbing a
(deputy's) jacket and trying to kick the
deputy sheriffs."
Sheriff Tom Bosenko declined to address
specifics of case, since the matter is
under litigation. He said an internal
investigation is being conducted, but it
doesn't appear that the deputies did
anything wrong.
"The allegation is just that - it could
be false," Bosenko said. "There could be
repercussion in terms of the careers and
the reputation the officers, which could
be destroyed by jumping to conclusions
with these mere allegations."
Simonis didn't return two calls to the
address listed in the suit as her residence.
A man who answered the phone at Lovett's
address said she didn't live there anymore
and he didn't know how to contact her.
Moore couldn't be reached for comment.
The teens, who represented themselves in
the suit without an attorney, each demand
from the county $2 million in gold coins
for the allegedly unlawful search and for
their "kidnapping and torture."
Loomis said it's very unusual for plaintiffs
in civil suits filed against the county to
ask for coinage.
"Normally, they just ask for dollar damages,"
Loomis said. "You have to ask them why they
wanted it in gold coins."

have been me or anyone else in here who broke in on teenage girls we
