Dan, I'd recommend you get some additional opinions as to the date of your
shield nickel.
Checking my reference books, I find that the loop of the 9 on an 1879 is no
taller than the upper loop on the 8 on any of the dies that produced them;
your coin has the fourth digit extending much farther down.
There are at least two varieties of 1870 on which the 0 of the date is
shorter and a tad narrower than the other digits, in contrast to the 1870
you have pictured, which sports a taller and wider 0.
My two cents' worth would get a nickel three-cent piece in the change for a
shield nickel, so life's not all bad! 8>)
