Berlin presents Commemorative Coin and Postage Stamp Series

On Tuesday, March 31, 2009, the German Minister of Finance
Peer Steinbrück presented the 10-euro commemorative coin
"IAAF Leichtathletik WM Berlin 2009" (IAAF World Championships
in Athletics Berlin 2009) and the postage stamp series
"Für den Sport" (For Sports) in honour of the 12th IAAF
World Championships in Athletics berlin 2009T.

This is only the third time in the history of the Federal
Republic of Germany that a commemorative coin has been
issued for an athletic occasion, following the coins created
for the Summer Olympic Games in Munich in 1972 and the FIFA
World Cup in 2006.

The Federal Minister of the Interior, Dr. Wolfgang Schäuble,
emphasised the significance of the coin and postage stamp
series: "One year after the Olympic Games, we are excited
to be hosting the world's elite athletes here at berlin
2009T. With the money raised by the 10-euro commemorative
coin, we will be supporting the cultural programme that
will accompany this important sports event; through the
2009 sports postage stamp series, we will be able to
provide support for top German athletic programmes."

Dr. Clemens Prokop, Executive President of the World
Championships Berlin Organising Committee and President
of the German Athletics Association (DLV),
added: "We are very happy that athletics and sports in
general are being promoted so prominently and visibly
for all German citizens through this commemorative coin
and postage stamp series berlin 2009T."

The face value of the commemorative coin is 10
euros; a limited edition of 1,890,000 coins will be
minted, of which a maximum of 200,000 coins will have a
proof-like finish. The smooth edge of the coin will
have an in-set inscription reading "SPORT BEWEGT DIE
WELT" (Sports moves the world), as well as the mint
marks (A, D, F, G, J) from the Federal German mints in
Berlin, Munich, Stuttgart, Karlsruhe and Hamburg.

The four motifs for the postage stamp series are all
dedicated to the 12th IAAF World Championships in
Athletics berlin 2009T. With the postage stamp series
"Für den Sport", the Federal Ministry of Finance is
providing financial support for the Stiftung Deutsche
Sporthilfe (German Sports Foundation). The additional
proceeds will benefit the programmes for top German
athletes.

The 10-euro commemorative coin "IAAF Leichtathletik
WM Berlin 2009" and the postage stamp series "Für
den Sport" will be available starting on April 9, 2009.
