Over the past 35 years I have put together a set of Lincoln BIE cents of
the following dates:

1942; 1950; 1950D; 1951; 1951D; 1952; 1952S; 1953; 1953D; 1954D; 1954S;
1955; 1955D; 1955S; 1956; 1956D; 1957; 1957D; 1958; 1960D sm dt; 1960D
lg dt; 1961D

I would be interesed in trading e-mail concerning BIE lincoln cents with
other collectors. Of particular interest to me would be information as
to what other dates that may exist, relative scaricty of the various
dates and any information about any publications that may contain data
on the BIE cents.

Any information out there? Please post on r.r.c. or e-mail me.

Thanks,
Bernie

Sounds interesting. I have pulled a few out of rolls over the years but have
never catalogued them or attempted to put them in any order. A few days ago
I was surprised to pull a new1999 BIE from a roll. That was the first coin
I've seen with a BIE dated after the 70's, maybe the 60's.

Interesting. I have a pictures of a BIE cent on my error page. (See below)
I didn't think anyone collected them anymore ... Surest way to find out is
to run an ad on e-bay offering one or two for sale. I have an interesting
1959 cent. I'm not sure it would be classified as a true BIE though.
Someday when I get the time I will have to photograph it.

I'm sorry, but I don't even know what BIE stands for. Pardon my
ignorance, but could someone explain?

A BIE cent has a die chip between the B and the E of LIBERTY that fills up
the space. Check my error pages below and you will see pictures of typical
examples.

Me, too. This is why I'm beginning to hate acronyms.

I recall finding a bunch of 'IIB', 'BIE', and even an 'EIR' die break on
1995 cents, back when I was searching Brinks boxes for Doubled Dies.
IIRC, the first lot I ever sold on eBay was for one each of those three
die breaks, and sold for a princely sum under $2.

In the shameless self-promotion department, I currently have a 1956-D
RPM#1 cent, newly listeed in the Cherrypickers' Guide, with a 'BIE' die
break up for auction on eBay. This is a rare stage of this particular
RPM, and in the condition offered (AU) it is probably one of the finest
known.

Hi,
Just wanted to let you know I visited your Error pages and enjoyed them very
much. I have been a Lincoln Cherrypicker for quite a while and I still get a
kick out of finding such minor treasures as you have displayed. Thanks for
sharing.

To the best of my knowledge, the book "Major Variety and Oddity Guide
to United States Coins" by Frank Spadone is the only publication that
I know of that covers odd things like die cracks and BIE, and BIIE,
and various other "weird" stuff, along with a few DDO's DDR's and
RPMs.

They are relatively inexpensive. I picked mine up for $3. Although,
bear in mind, these weren't printed after 1981 to the best of my
knowledge. Check your local coin shop for one, or do like I did. I
went to a used book store and got one.

I hope that helps you out.

The reference book for BIE's is the BIE Handbook
published by the BIE Guild in 1972. I found the softbound
copy of this on ebay last year and was probably lucky to
get that. I have yet to find a hard bound copy of which
I believe only a 1000 copies were made. This book is available
in the ANA Library. Jean Cohen's book on Lincoln cent die
cracks is also in the ANA Library. As for RPM's on Lincolns
there is James Wiles RPM book for Lincolns. Still in print and
an excellent reference. For DD's John Wexler and Kevin Flynn have
the Authoritative Reference on Lincoln Cents which covers the major
DD's on the Lincoln cent. You will, btw, find plenty of reference books by
these two
authors.
And if anyone cares, the rarest BIE of all is, it's the 1959D Full BIE.
It has been referred to, in the BIE newsletters, as "The King of BIEs."

If anyone is still watching this group.
I'm looking for more information on the BIE Mint Oddity Collector's Guild. I would like to get in contact with anyone who was a member.
I'm working on a tribute to some of the pioneers in mint errors and varieties. There seems to be two in the LINCOLN Die Break "BIE" area. The main one was the "BIE Mint Oddity Collector's Guild". The second is Jean Cohen's "THE CLASSIFICATION AND VALUE OF ERRORS ON THE LINCOLN CENT". These seem to be the first to assign some type of a index/catalog number to LINCOLN Die Breaks. I'm looking to find out more about this. Also if there were others.
