I am thinking about buying 3 of the ATB 5 ounce silvers. US Mint price for
the "collectors edition" with a P mint mark is $204.95; the price for the
bullion price at coast coin is $197.65, a $7.30 difference. Currently I have
the 2010 Yellowstone (NP2) Govt and the 2011 Olympic 5-Ozer. I think the
bullion coin looks better than the "collector" version. It just may be the
bullion coin is in a flip and the "collector" version is in encapsulated.
For the most part I buying for bullion value but also hope for a bit of
numismatic value.
I would appreciate any comments.. I know the mint is slow to act on price
and any dealer will act immediately act on silver price swings

Five ounces of silver at today's spot of about $33.15 would be about $165.
Depending on what the spot price of silver was when Coast placed its ad,
their "bullion" version may no longer be available at $197.65. If it's the
5oz ATB coins that attract you, why not compare their current price to the
current price of five Unc silver eagles and see if there's much difference.
If you especially like those ATB's, go for it. But if you're looking for
the best buy in silver bullion, there may be better options.

I checked the price a few minutes before my post. I bought my 2011
Olympic 5-Ozer at 169.90 when Silver was in the 27-28 range on 30-Dec-11. I
want to buy the ATB 5-Ozer. I don't know why, call it it the collector
thing. On a pure bullion position I buy SAE, GAE, GAT from a bullion firm
(Monex). Bullion mercahnts do not care about "Numismatic" positions.
I am a coin colletor, investor, and bullion buyer on a limited budget. I
do separate my roles. As far as the ATB 5-Ozer; it is a mix between the
collector and bullion modes. Unfortanetley, I am too undisciplned in my
collecting roles.

There are too many attractive options out there for the average collector to
remained "disciplined" in his or her collecting strategy. If you already
enjoy owning strict bullion coins separate from the 5oz ATB's, you should
not feel too bad about sometimes paying an extra premium over bullion for an
ATB. As for their future numismatic value, who can predict? There are a
number of modern silver coins and sets made for collectors that haven't done
too well investment-wise.

Today I placed my order. I went with the US Mint. The difference was
only $5 per coin. At a silver price of $33.87. It is only $35 or $7 per
ounce over spot.
In 2007/8 I spent a lot on numismatic coins. I would have been better off
buying junk silver/gold but I love the coins I bought. I haven't bought a
slab (with the exception of a 1914-D XF Buffalo) in about 2 years.
