I have to tell you, I recently submitted some coins into ICG for
certification. In my opinion, they are dead on with the grading. I
think I will be submitting a lot more coins to them. I am an
authorized dealer for PCGS & NGC and do use these wonderful grading
services as well, but I really think they have just gotten to be too
expensive when you consider the cost of grading and postage,
especially for World coins. Anyone else have an opinion on the
matter?

Thanks
Joe

I'm afraid you're going to get your head bitten off by those who live to
do just this. Your testimonial may be legit, or it may be "astroturfing"
-- fake, planted, or paid for in some way. You don't give enough
information to know with any assurance, no store or business name, no
last name. Joe who? Are you Spring Coins on eBay, maintained by
moneymaster2011, a dealer in U.S. and world coins? You don't indicate
this, and if so why Springscoins here and Spring Coins and
moneymaster2011 there? This post of yours appears to be your first in
this newsgroup as Springscoins, though coint...@aol.com has posted
here, albeit not in three years. Lots of iffyness to all this.

Randy Campbell and Skip Fazzari are well known professional graders,
and ICG is a reputable
service. Market acceptance is not very good, but you can find some
real nice coins in their
slabs if you buy the coin and not the plastic (and marketing hype)

I like ICG.

I agree with Frank on this one. If you search the newsgroup, you'll
find we have had a lot of discussions on third party grading
services. As is expected, PCGS and NGC are first tier, ICG and ANACS
are second tier, and so on.

In the earlier years ICG had a reputation for being dead-on accurate
for coins graded MS-65 and below. Back then, PCGS rarely graded any
coin as MS/PR-70, and NGC was almost as strict. ICG was much more
liberal in the super grades, grading some 68 coins as 70s (crack-outs
sent to PCGS and NGC usually indicated this).

I haven't stayed up on ICG, so I can't say one way or the other, but I
wouldn't have any qualms about buying any coin in an ICG slab, as long
as the price was reasonable. My trimes worth.

I've always been told and I live by this saying. Learn to grade, buy
the coin and not the slab!

The probvlem lies not so much when you buy the coin, I have purchased
coins from ICG graded MS70 and PCGS graded MS70 (which they very
rarely used to do) all of the coins appear to be identical. the
problem comes when trying to sell them. ICG is still considered a
third tier grader by many dealers and as such they will automatically
discount the value offer of any coin graded by them.

So you try to sell your raw MS64 Morgan to someone, assuring him that you
have learned how to grade. Do you think you'd get the same price as you
would with an ICG MS64 Morgan?

I never said I was selling anything and I rarely sale my coins. I only
pointing out that you can't always trust the grading companies,
because even they have a bad day and learn to grade your self.
Although it is your money so feel free to do as you wish.

I never said you were selling either. Strictly a hypothetical. If you'll
never be selling anything, why make a serious effort to learn to grade at
all? Just label your bright unc's as MS70 and circ's as AU55. Assuming all
the graders at the TPG's also have "learned how to grade", why shouldn't you
trust them-- bad day or not? But then maybe they won't have the same vested
interest in giving your coin the max grade that you would hope for, or might
give it yourself.

And is that another saying you live by? "It is your money so feel free to
do as you wish"? Pretty profound. I'd give it an 8.5.

I love old raw coins just as much as I like slab coins, that is why I
would learn to grade.
