Oh yeah. They've taken ugly to a new level with that design. Compare
the "winner" with D. Carr's design. My ghod -- wtf are people up there
thinking/drinking/smoking?

Massive Brain Freeze. :-)
Seriously, those are the worst 5 design choices I have seen with
Texas (Massive Brain Melt) being a very close second if you have seen
those.

Texas....did I see Texas? I can;t remember...

'how about a state outline and a star!'

Owner of the world second-finest collection of the Coins of the Republic of
Honduras from 1832-1922, as if ANYBODY gave a rat's patoot......
When I think of MI I think of Detroit and cars. Is this the 1st purely
geographical design?
When I think of Michigan I think of Grand Rapids under about 4 and half
feet with the wind howling across a flat treeless landscape, furniture
dealers everywhere and tractor trailers *still* crawling the interstate.
Alan
'I still have nightmares about that one'
Cars and Motown for me too. I am sure there are other things too that
could be represented well also.
"More than 4300 design choices" and what did The Committee choose?
2 state/lake outlines
2 state/lake outlines with a small car off to the side
1 state/lake outline with some other stuff about the size of a gnat's
butt placed around it.
Clip Art Quarters at their worst.
Well, it depends on the KIND of cars. Those Michiganers who live a
couple of hours from me would likely envision a rusted out mid-1970s
Chevy with a deer roped to its roof.
OTOH, that bridge on I-75 (as depicted on Mr. Carr's design) is the
first 'Michigan' image that comes to MY mind.

In Ohio -- where I now temporarily live -- the problem was equal and
opposite. No attention given until the last minute and a hasty
committee of three. Beth Deisher was the only serious expert in
numismatics to serve, as I recall.
My wife and I are moving to New Mexico this month. I will do what I
can when I get there. (Let's see: outline of the state, road runner,
flying saucer.... outline of the state cactus... outline of the state,
atom bomb... outline of the state ....) In truth, my favorite is
Rhode Island. Good composition. Good theme. No state outline.
>Are we running out of imagination? These are barely more than outlines of
>the state.
Dang. Those are truely the worst I've seen so far. I think MI has the
worst state outline for putting on a coin. It's too spread out when you
include the UP. The Mackinac bridge looks really garbled when superimposed
over the state outline. Bad designs, all of them.
Chris
My proposal for the California quarter is looking more and more

These designs will completely eliminate our ability to detect die cracks.
Good job, Michigan! Creating a coin so ugly it can not be recognized from a
blank planchet with squiggles gouged into it.

Is that "CA" as in "caca"?
I think your design should also incorporate a motto ("This is what our
state is shaped like".)
LOL!
Get all 50 and complete the jigsaw puzzle. ;-)

I'm beginning to wonder if Colorado and Wyoming are going to use their
state outlines, and if Alaska is going to insist their won't fit on
anything less than a half-dollar.
I'm shocked, shocked, that art by political committee is so drab as
lifeless. Simply shocked.

Alaska - polar bear.
TomDeLorey
Is the polar bear white and the Kodiak bear brown? I guess I had white on my
mind
because when I think of Alaska I think of snow.

Alaskans are smart people.
I predict no state outline for Alaska.
Bet you are right about Ursa Major, however.
Maybe I can root for a Majestic Caribou under it.
Alan
'HTT for Pillar Dollar...not much time left'
Warming itself next to the pipeline :)
I wouldn't mind seeing the top of a totem pole. A 'Big Dipper and North
Star' behind it would be a nice added touch.
Ding ding ding! That's be one winner of a design. A little like the
old Canadian dollar commemorative, but the Dipper would be a great
addition.
It's such a good design idea, I'm sure they'll never pick it. Bring on
the SO.

Wouldn't the Alaska state flag look nice on a coin?
<http://www.50states.com/flag/akflag.htm>. I'm somewhat surprised
that no state flag has appeared on a quarter up to now.
State flags are expressly forbidden by the Mint's rules.

Well, that explains it :-) Probably just as well for most
state flags, but some, like Alaska and Colorado, would look pretty
good on a coin.

And Ohio's would be unique.
